after pioneering the use of CD decks and FX units on the original "DEcks, EFX & 909" mix, and using Traktor on "Closer to the Edit", hitler-haircut sporting Canuck Richie Hawtin turns his hand to Ableton Live (with surround-mixing in Protools, tech nerds) and predictably makes everyone else look like terrific morons. This basically goes through the barrier and is not really any sort of DJ mix, rather an extended 100 minute sound collage assembled from over 150 tracks, and divided from there into 28 'movements'. The mood is typically dark, bubbling and clicky as one expects from minimal techno's foremost exponent. grooves are built up and tweaked over the course of 20 minutes or more - he has a talent for seeing both the wider, long-term direction of the music and the immediate sound, like a good snooker player.

I have yet to listen to it in surround, but the fact that you can at all rather speaks volumes, no? in 10 years, people will still be biting this one's dust.

Last of the DE9 Trilogy from Hawtin. Minimal Techno mix from a ridiculous number of tunes with the help of Ableton Live software. I don't think Richie has covered that much new ground, despite what he says, since Closer to the Edit (still my favourite), but it is still a class act. He has found a number of exceptional new Techno tunes of the Minimal persuasion and melded and moulded them into this delightfully morphing mix. Gripping as it is minimal... how he do that? ****1/2

Just when I thought Richie Hawtin had taken the techno mix concept as far at it could go, along comes another piece of musical brilliance that stretches the boundaries even further. In a beautifully presented package we are treated to an immersive audio-visual feast of the highest quality.

This latest production is slightly harder than DE9: Closer to the edit, and thanks to Richie's clever use of technology, it has more layers, more depth, and even more soul. The 74 minute CD mix is excellent, but the true highlight of this 2-disc set is the DVD. If you have surround sound, the 96 minute 5.1 DVD mix is breathtaking - a swirling, looping, hypnotic ride through robot funk, sonic melodies, and pounding beats.

Far too many famous DJ's seem content with churning out 70 minute, 10-track mixes that most accomplished bedroom DJ's could easily match. What Richie has created here is beyond the reach of even the most talented mortals - it is something magical. At one point during the mix, there are 9 tracks playing together, with Richie splicing and dicing beats and edits like a musical surgeon. The tempo changes at just the right moments, with breaking beats, twisted vocal samples and flashing synths. These all act as interludes and a chance to draw breath before the pounding beat returns that he keeps flowing throughout the entire mix.

Richie crafts his music with atom-splitting precision, and watching him create his masterpiece in the studio (one of the DVD extras), it shows he is clearly a musician at one with his music. The video extras are a real treat, particularly the 30-minute segment of his Time Warp set in Germany.

The blonde-haired king of minimal is back with more of the same. But this time the production seems cleaner and smoother, mainly with thanks to the great Ableton 5 software and of course, a celebrated and highly talented mind at the controls.
'Transitions' is in my opinion, neither stonger or weaker than its predecessor, (DE9: Closer To The Edit). It is simply a natural continuation. You could effectively put the two albums together and have one seamless excursion into minimal techno.
This album sees the debut of an extra 5:1 DVD in the package, which features extra tracks and some magnificent rendering of audio effects. If that wasn't enough, the self-styled rythmic pulse of well-selected loops is both captivating and innovative. This is Richie Hawtin at his best; proving that his experience in the studio is as competent as his live sets.
If you don't have the first DE9 album, buy this... and if you do have it, then you should also buy this... Even its just for the fact that these recordings seem to be gathering status as a genuine peice of techno history.
Excellant... (Again)
Mr Jeff Mills watch out.

This album is stunning. I can't sleep without it. I play it all night on repeat play. It's beautiful without being cheesy.
