I got this cd off the man himself after he played support for Jeff Beck in the Ulster Hall. A real down to earth gentleman and decent guy off stage, an awesome player onstage. Unlike the Answer who could do with another guitar player to flesh out their sound while Paul Mahon pulls of his amazing solos, Simon can do the lot himself easily and with flair.
This cd does a good job of capturing the amazing techniques and styles that Simon has mastered. Listening to him live, or on cd, it is obvious that he takes the guitar places most other players never get to in a lifetime. As another review states, his sense of timing is incredible, the pentatonic legato freakouts are awesome, and best of all this playing is not a copy of any other player I can think off, although fans of SRV, Free, Led Zeppelin(the guitar work, not the bombast), Ritchie Blackmore etc... ought to really like it. In fact anyone who likes guitar ought to love it.
The production on the cd is clean, uncluttered and lets everything have its place. I have played it through at least 5 times and find it hard to take out of the cd player. Simon has a great singing voice and has written all but two of the tracks on the album. Interestingly, for me, the weakest track is a cover of the Free song "Be my friend". His own material is well up to the mark, not instantly gratifying with everything up front, but rewarding to listen to again and again.
One of the finest musical discoveries for me in years. I can not wait to see what is next.
