"'The best one on grasses' Garden Life"

Product Description

Grasses are the keynote plants of twenty-first century gardening. They provide year-round interest and are hugely versatile offering a diversity of size, form, colour and texture unsurpassed by any genus. They are treasured for the way they seem to capture light and bring structure and movement to gardens of any size. A relative newcomer, a hundred years ago gardeners only had the choice of eight or ten ornamental grasses. Now thanks to nurserymen, breeders and collectors around the world there are several hundred varieties. These cover an enormous range of sizes, textures and colours and are suitable for almost any growing condition. Informative and inspirational, this book guides the reader through this wealth of choice selecting the grasses best suited to various garden uses, habitats and design styles. Individual portraits at the heart of the book capture the fluid, dynamic and evanescent beauty of the different grasses, while photographs of borders and gardens illustrate a host of ideas for growing them. The possibilities are limited only by the imagination of the gardener or designer.

At the beginning of the year i decided to redesign my garden.something low maintenance but pleasing to the eye but where do i start what do i need, this book has enabled me to chose the correct plants for the sunny side of the garden and the plants that like shade.

The pictures of the grasses are very detailed and the colour is excellent,in the section planting and after-care the information is made easy to follow which gave me the confidence that i am able to give the grasses the correct care.

This book is a excellent and easy guide to a beautiful garden.

Beautiful close up photographs - and they are - may be a delight in themselves but they do little for gardeners who want to know what a plant looks like as a whole in a real context. The text was not detailed enough on information for keen gardeners, like origin of the plant, soil conditions, habit, hardiness ratings, etc.

This is an elegant picture book with clear basic information, and a very nice one at that.
It's not for you if you want a detailed handbook on selecting and growing grasses in your garden, in line with other RHS encyclopedias.

slightly disappointed 12 July 2010

Not as much information on different types of grasses or how to put them into a design as I would have liked.
