This work aims to bring people together from the local authority, voluntary and academic worlds - an approach which is reflected throughout the book. It provides a range of materials outlining the theory, policy and practice. Part one contains six chapters from the editors which aim to provide the backdrop for the remaining more practice orientated content. They examine theories of the family and family support, reflect on policy and practice development and outline the many complex developments in the voluntary sector. Part two of the book consists of nine practice chapters written by practioners working in the field on a day-to-day basis. They provide practical information on: working with alcohol and drug abuse problems, supporting single parents, work with Asian and African women, play-work, practice in rural areas, the role of volunteers, parenting and youth justice, assessment work and the role of information technology. The volume as a whole intends to underpin knowledge, theory and practical guidance. This is supplemented in part three by a guide to helpful materials, an extensive bibliography and index.
