2.0 out of 5 stars disappointing 17 Mar 2011
Format:Paperback
I read this at the same time as O'Reilly's RESTful Web Services (which I would definitely recommend) and was disappointed -

(1) Unlike the O'Reilly book it does not really explain the philosophy of RESTful services, and does not express an opinion on good design - OK, I know the two books have different purposes but the best books on software (e.g. PACKT's book on jQuery) manage to do combine the big picture, with a personal view, and the detailed information.

(2) It doesn't do a proper comparison and evaluation of the different PHP frameworks available, just a brief cut-and-paste job from the frameworks' own publicity

(3) The examples it gives are too simple to be useful in real-world problems, and too lengthy to be taken in by someone looking for design guidance

A shame because I have found other books from PACKT to be very good indeed.

3.0 out of 5 stars Needs Updating 4 Jan 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Before picking up this book, I had no idea what RESTful web services were; this book taught me a lot, so for that reason I would recommend it.

As a novice developer however, it would have been useful to follow along with all of the code examples. Unfortunately a lot of the services listed in the book as examples are no longer supported. For example many Yahoo APIs have been completely overhauled and are no longer available, and the GA earthquake XML feed has also been changed. In fact, most of the feeds used in the book have changed or are no longer available. So, an update with revised examples would be an incredible help; this edition is listed as being released in 2008, and seven years is long time in technology.

So, desperately needs updating, but still worth a read.

5.0 out of 5 stars Well written look into RESTful Services 6 Dec 2008
Format:Paperback
I recently read this book and found the writing well paced and the examples particularly useful in getting up to speed with consuming web services using PHP and REST. The Yahoo Maps and Earthquakes sample code is a good example of how web services can be combined to build a new application and the book takes you though building a simple library book system that provides both the server based web services as well as the client service.

3.0 out of 5 stars A good grounding in REST 14 Jun 2012
By Ronnie
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
This book covers all the basics of REST including the key verbs and the key principles of REST.
I would have liked to see a Zend Example on REST in this book.
I liked the link up with the BBC news Web Service as an example.
Good for an introduction but other books may fill out some of the gaps.
