Ken Stott stars as the eponymous hero John Rebus, in this new adaption of Ian Rankin s worldwide best selling detective thriller of the same name. Set in Edinburgh, Rebus s investigations lead him through the city s ancient beauty and into its more sinister quarters. Stott s Rebus is recognisably Rankin s tough and street savvy character, but is softened by a sense of humour and taste for romance.
The Falls Rebus investigates the murder of an ageing obstetrician. Beside the body, a small coffin is found containing the effigy of a smiling baby (like those unearthed at Arthur s Seat in Edinburgh in the 19th Century). The trail leads Rebus into the wealthy and powerful circles of Edinburgh society where his inquires are coolly dismissed.
Fleshmarket Close A Kosovan illegal immigrant is found murdered in a notorious Edinburgh sink housing estate. Initially the murder appears to be race-related but Rebus is not convinced, despite the racist slur painted on the victim s head. His investigations lead him through the world of asylum seekers and gangland bosses who cruelly govern the poor inhabitants of the estate. Further deaths lead Rebus to conclude that the killer s motivation is not racist, but is rather one of sibling rivalry and hidden passion.
