Product Description

Product Description

In 2009 it was How NOT to Write a Novel ('A hilarious, wickedly observed and deeply useful guide' Observer). In 2010 it's READ THIS NEXT - Sandra Newman and Howard Mittelmark have written the perfect book for anyone who has ever struggled to choose what to read next.

But this is far more than a guide for book groups. Covering 600 books ranging from The Shock Doctrine to Gentlemen Prefer Blondes, and exploring all the important issues like how to tell the difference between Naomis Wolf and Klein, whether anyone really likes Emma Bovary, what makes a really good loo book and whether it's really wrong to marry for money, READ THIS NEXT reminds you exactly why you love reading and then makes you want to go out and read lots more. And what's more, it's very, very funny.

About the Author

Sandra Newman is the author of the novels Cake and The Only Good Thing Anyone Has Ever Done (which was shortlisted for the Guardian First Book Award). Her writing has appeared in Harper's and Granta, amongst others. Howard Mittelmark is the author of Age of Consent. His writing has appeared in the New York Times, Washington Post and other publications. Their first co-written book How Not to Write a Novel was a great success and their next book takes on the entire canon of Western literature.

I got this book for Christmas, and started reading it right away. I'm really pleased with it -- I've torn through all the books on my shelf, want to expand my horizons, and not only did I have a GREAT time reading this book (I found it funny and a fast read), it gave me some ideas for things I should read I'd never considered before. My goal for 2012, in fact, is to get at least one quarter of the books mentioned and finish them. I'll let you know how I do.

Everyone who loves to read should have this book--especially if you are, as I am, constantly disappointed by the recommendations of friends and the constant barrage of houses telling me "what's hot" and what I should be reading. This book will help every reader make better choices. I know it helped me!

Someone gave this to me for Christmas and I read most of it on the train ride home. Kept laughing out loud and marking the ideas that sounded good to me, like True Grit, Storming Heaven, and I really must get around to Infinite Jest. They've convinced me. There was a time when I wouldn't need a book like this, one book always led to the next, but for the past few years I keep coming to the end of a book with no idea what to pick up next. So thank you friends who gave this to me.

I was moved to write by a reviewer who complained that this book "meanders" - but that's exactly what makes it so good. Within a sober overall structure (chapters are headed "Love," "Family," "History" etc.), Mittlelmark and Newman gallivant through each category to suggest books that are both old favorites and ones I've never heard of. They achieve the rather spectacular feat of combining extremely useful information with hilarious prose. Besides finding books I wanted to read myself, it was invaluable for picking out Christmas presents.
