5.0 out of 5 stars 5 stars for novelty - a strange but interesting book - please read review 26 July 2014

This is a somewhat strange book. I don't really know how to rate it, but given that I like the idea of it, I'm giving 5 stars. I'll try my best to describe what's inside.

The book starts with a brief forward about the importance of learning vocabulary words. It then proceeds to have a HUGE amount of practice problems to build your vocabulary. AN IMPORTANT NOTE: THIS IS A BOOK TO LEARN ENGLISH VOCABULARY!

The exercises are basically these fill in the blank / multiple choice type questions. A single page will have 4 words on top, and you have to put those 4 English words into the appropriate phrase listed below (out of 4 choices). So, you match 4 words to 4 phrases. This exercise is the entire book, and take up almost every page. It's a long book, too! So there are plenty of exercises listed (several thousand, from the looks of it).

I'm not sure if this would actually help someone learn English vocabulary or not. I can say that the idea is interesting, and it may be the perfect book for someone who knows a decent amount of English but wants to sharpen their vocabulary. I definitely think that you'd need to have at least an intermediate grasp of the language already to make use of this technique, otherwise it would be too hard.

I really, really, really wish this idea was applied to learning vocabulary in German (or French, or Spanish, or whatever). I'd be really interested to see that. I'd pay to see that! I already know English, so this book isn't useful to me at all. But, for a language that's foreign to me, it may be a good technique. I'm just not sure!
