Book Description

The Mallard and the Grantham Loco
Including an account of the Barkston Lincolnshire Rail Crash of 1936
“Railway Lives” was researched and written by Betty Elmer who is a local broadcaster and published author. Grantham is an historic market town situated in rural Lincolnshire in eastern England.
During the steam age it was an important depot and marshalling yard located on the east coast main line which runs from King’s Cross, London to Newcastle and Edinburgh, Scotland. During World War II the population was about 25,000.
Pete Shelbourne, Gerry Edwards and Les Marshall spent their working lives on the railway working their way up through the various grades until they became fully qualified engine drivers. “Railway Lives” is their story.

The stories of ordinary working men just doing their job through difficult times. These men are the heroes of our wonderful railway heritage and I enjoyed the opportunity to share the experience.
