5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent choice of action photographs from WWII, 11 Feb 2001

This review is from: RAF in Action, 1939-1945: Images from War Artists and Air Cameras (Hardcover)
Roy Conyers Nesbit has chosen well from the Public Records Office to portray the RAF in action during WWII. Nesbit's choice covers all aspects of the RAF on the Home Front, the Middle East, and the Far East, and I would thoroughly recommend this book to anybody interested in the history of the RAF during this period. My only criticism would be that a few of the captions are incorrect in relation to the aircraft dipicted. However, this did not detract from my enjoyment of this marvellous book.

4.0 out of 5 stars Photo History of the RAF at War!, 16 April 2008
By Michael OConnor "Wordsmith" - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: RAF in Action, 1939-1945: Images from War Artists and Air Cameras (Hardcover)
RAF IN ACTION 1939-1945 is a pictorial history of Royal Air Force operations in all theaters of war. Published in 2000 by the Public Record Office it offers a sampling - over 450 photographs worth of sample! - of the material found in the PRO Archives. As such, it offers a nice photographic overview of the RAF in action.

The visual record found in RAF IN ACTION 1939-1945 is divided into three parts: "North-West Europe and the Atlantic," "Africa and Southern Europe" and "India and South-East Asia." The first section is, by far, the largest, taking up 148 of the book's 255 pages. Each part is further sub-divided into six page sections on topics like 'Daylight Bombing,' 'Fighter Sweeps,' 'Dambusting,' 'Hitler's Secret Weapons,' 'Desert Victory,' 'Against Odds in Burma' and so on. Roy Nesbit, a noted author and WWII RAF veteran, supplied captions for the photos.

Along with photographs, RAF IN ACTION 1939-1945 includes over 50 black & white and color artworks and maps. The artwork - done by wartime artists and modern artists like Charles Thompson and Mark Postlethwaite -
is easily the crown jewel of the book with many wonderfully done paintings of RAF aircraft in action.

The book's blurb claims it is "the definitive illustrated history" but I beg to differ. For all the endless shots of aircraft, bombs on targets, shippings strikes, etc., there are almost no photographs of RAF aircrew. Then too the topical arrangement makes for a disjointed narrative.

Having said that, I do still recommend Nesbit's book as an enjoyable, illustrated look at RAF WWII ops around the world.
