Product Description

Review

'A loaf out loud read ... It's a pun on toast innit' --Karl Pilkington

'Shaun Keaveny has taken raw facts, put them through the blender of his whimsy and emerged with an hilarious gazpacho' --Phill Jupitus

'This should be in every loo for the title alone. Most BBC tie-ins suck like a sucker fish with a Dyson, but this ragbag of dubious claims from BBC 6Music's 'Toast the Nation' is worth a log or two... as a leftfield sort of travel guide to the UK, this is fun.' --Time Out `Best Loo Reads'

Product Description

An affectionate and very funny look at Britain’s favourite places and why we love them

By John Ault VINE™ VOICE
Format:Paperback
This book was born from the "toast the nation" feature on Shaun W Keveney's breakfast show. The point of the feature is that any home town can be celebrated, often for the most obscure and random reason. This yields a treasure of random and funny facts for towns across the UK, with the addition of Shaun's own gentle humour.

The whole is a creation of a sort of crowd wisdom. Nothing pretends to be comprehensive or 100% authoritative. Rather it is a celebration of the variety and oddness of our nation.

A great gift for any uncle/ brother/ son/ daughter/ auntie etc, etc.

Genius 6 April 2012
By WGL
Format:Paperback
If life could write, it would write like Keaveney.' Sean Keaveney's epic masterpiece intertwines the lives of private and public individuals during the time of the Napoleonic wars and the French invasion of Russia. The fortunes of the Rostovs and the Bolkonskys, of Pierre, Natasha, and Andrei, are intimately connected with the national history that is played out in parallel with their lives. Balls and soirees alternate with councils of war and the machinations of statesmen and generals, scenes of violent battles with everyday human passions in a work whose extraordinary imaginative power has never been surpassed. The prodigious cast of characters, both great and small, seem to act and move as if connected by threads of destiny as the novel relentlessly questions ideas of free will, fate, and providence. Yet Keaveney's portrayal of marital relations and scenes of domesticity is as truthful and poignant as the grand themes that underlie them. In this revised and updated version of the definitive and highly acclaimed Maude translation, Keaveney's genius and the power of his prose are made newly available to the contemporary reader

Perfect bog reading! 21 Nov 2010
Format:Paperback
Full of useless information about places you've often never heard of and have no wish to go to - this is a perfect accompaniment to a nice big dump!

Particularly fascinating is the potted history of Scarborough - the fact that I am the Scarborough Toaster is neither here nor there!

Cracking stuff!
