Great turnbased game 30 Jun 2010
Fun:
Great little game based on the well known R-Type games.

Command your battle-fleet to take on the Bydo Empire.
This game is turn based rather than real time which gives you as much time as you need to think about your next move, and plays a bit like the old Panzer General type games (If you remember those)
Plenty of units to research and build to increase the strength of your fleet. You collect resources during the missions to spend on new units between the missions.

All of the different R-Type ships are present, along with the different Forces and Bits. The game successfully integrates the dynamics of the original game, you are able to attach/detach the Forces to the fighters and send them to Ram the opposition, you can also charge up the Wave Cannons on the fighters to release a Super-Blast which is devistating.

There are lots of little touches throughout, like the back history of the units and the Bydo War in which the R-type games take place.
All in all, a great game, just the right balance between action and thinking, well worth the buy.

The Special edition includes collectible cards with artwork and the history of each of the R-Type games.

This is a good game if you are looking for a turn-based strategy game.
The first 2 missions are training missions to get you used to the simple controls, and you can replay any of the missions you've completed to gain experience for your pilots.
The game is set out with a hexagonal grid and each ship has a certain number of hexes it can move each turn.
You get to command a fleet of ships that are split into 3 general categories: capitol ships, fighters/bombers, and "Forces". The "Forces" are orbs that attach to your fighters and give attack and defence bonuses. The fighters/bombers have missiles, cannons and a weapon that needs several turns to charge but is seriously powerful. The capitol ships are large and take up several hexes and have bigger versions of the fighters weapons. They can also carry your fighters so they can get refueled and repaired.
There are things to collect which give you options to build new and improved ships across all categories. And there is stuff to mine using a specialist ship which then gives you the materials in order to build you new craft.
The only bad point about this game is the long load times between missions.

No where in any of the reviews could I find what the "Special" edition was. And been a fan of the R-Type shooters I decided I'd try this. And I can tell you that the "Special" edition purely comes with a set of nice cards which are not included in the normal edition.

The game itself is the same as the standard normal edition.
