Hildegard Behrens gives the finest recorded performance of the title role - the voice may not always be steady in the lower ranges but there is a thrilling intensity and a gleaming top register which suits the role perfectly. Ozawa conducts with more clarity and detail than is usually the case and the result means that whilst the orchestra can always be heard it rarely drowns out the singers. The remaining singers are somewhat hit and miss, but overall this doesn't distract from this recording being overall the most satisfying of those currently available.
