The Genesis of the Seventies was a very different group from the Genesis of the Eighties and the Nineties - although not as different as some people would like to think.

Most of those who picked up on Genesis during the Eighties as their succession of hits encircled the globe had only the haziest idea of what had gone before. “In the later years there were people coming to our ... Read more in Amazon's Genesis Store

Product Description

Spanning 42 years, this 3-CD, 37-track set documents the band’s history with classic Genesis material compiled alongside selections from the solo careers of Tony Banks, Phil Collins, Peter Gabriel, Steve Hackett, and Mike Rutherford / Mike + The Mechanics. Genesis and their associated solo projects have accumulated a remarkable and undiminished series of accomplishments over the years, and have collectively amassed an incredible fourteen chart-topping albums as well as over two dozen more which reached the Top 10. In total, Genesis and the members’ related solo projects have sold more than 300 million albums worldwide. Chronologically ordered, R-Kive features the Genesis’s biggest hits including ‘Invisible Touch’, ‘Turn It On Again’, ‘Land of Confusion’ and ‘I Can’t Dance’. Along the way it also visits Mike + The Mechanics’ classics ‘The Living Years’ and ‘Over My Shoulder’, Collins’s ‘In The Air Tonight’ and his Philip Bailey duet ‘Easy Lover’, and Peter Gabriel’s ‘Solsbury Hill’ and ‘Biko’.

Trying to cover not only Genesis’s entire career, but also the solo careers of the key band members, on a 3-CD collection was bound to lead to some tough choices. Although many important songs from the Genesis discography have been left out, this collection does include some interesting solo tracks among the well-known hits of the 70s and 80s, which the three-man version had, as well as some fine examples of the earlier, five-man 70s progressive output.

But at whom, I wonder, is this collection actually aimed? The answer lies in that atrocious title and artwork, but I’ll come to that in a minute.

Timed to coincide with the Sum of the Parts DVD/Blu-Ray documentary, this collection shines a light on the extensive, and frankly staggering, talent the band incubated and nurtured. That’s no bad thing, but it’s difficult to imagine any potential for crossover remains. Gabriel’s fans no doubt know his history and have explored it. Ditto Collins’s vast fan-base. It is interesting to wonder what a Collins’ fan, who likes the foot-tapping disco of Easy Lover, would make of the magisterial art-rock of Supper’s Ready; or what a Gabriel fan thinks about the slightly misogynistic Invisible Touch. This compilation offers those contrasts and many, many more.

It is also difficult to believe that this compilation is aimed at new fans. A few years ago, Genesis released The Platinum Collection, which exceeds this set by some distance. What this new compilation really highlights is the fact that Genesis hasn’t put out any original work since 1998’s Calling All Stations. In truth, most older, Collins-centred fans regard We Can’t Dance as their last album, and that came out an awfully long 23 years ago.

Don't get me wrong, I love Genesis and it's member's solo material, but don't mistake me for a die-hard that thinks anything after Peter Gabriel left is a sin; the selection of songs on their own I can tolerate, the album assumes that because you like Genesis you are automatically a Phil Collins, Mike & The Mechanics, Steve Hackett, Peter Gabriel & Tony Banks fan too, which if you were indeed a fan, you'd already have all of their solo stuff. I'm sure trying to pick 3 discs worth of music from hundreds of songs is no easy task; however the album fails to become a 'greatest hits', instead it's a 'taster' or a 'connoisseur's collection', I think the official line is songs that were influential. It would suit an alien with no prior knowledge of the band or it's members, otherwise it all becomes very confused; one would assume a fan of Genesis would have explored the solo member's catalogue and picked their own favourites. On another issue the auto-rip suggests that some of these songs are remastered, something I cannot distinguish amongst previous CD versions of the tracks.

For a very casual Genesis fan.

Disclosure time, much as I loved Genesis back in the late 70s, and enjoyed their chart adventures in the early 80s ( I saw them on the Abacab tour), I drifted away from them after Mama and really don't play them much these days, other then the old blast of Suppers Ready. However having watched the recent documentary I purchased this pretty much on a whim when I was surprised to find how little I had of their catalogue digitally.

It's a slightly odd compilation in that it tries to cover solo careers as well as the band output. Which is perhaps pushing it for a band with a lengthy career and a penchant for long songs. Hopefully it will give wider exposure to those less high profile solo careers like Hackett and Banks - which presumably was the idea (Hacketts solo career was basically edited out of the documentary).

CD and up to the penultimate track on CD 2 this is what any older Genesis fan would expect - and its fantastic stuff. However then Easy Lover pops up, and for me from then on in it's downhill - I found their later pop career functional at best and I really don't think those songs have stood the test of time.

I'd rather have had some standout album tracks like Duchess (Banks favourite apparently) or Home By The Sea than the procession of mediocre hits and odd solo tracks that make up CD3.

Perhaps I should have gone for the Platinum Collection which has a better track listing but it's reverse chronological running order would have been annoying.

A good summary of their careers - but a missed opportunity.

well, you've got to, haven't you?! I've followed Genesis ever since Simon said 'listen to Genesis' back in 1972. I still can't play Firth of Fifth on the piano and I'm a piano player and I still find Apocalypse in 9/8 bafflingly brilliant so, with a new compilation, three discs, for £11.99, you've just got to , haven't you? It's not so much that my kids will listen to this, because they've known all Genesis, Peter Gabriel and Tony Banks since they were babies, but the song order will be interesting and I've never actively bought Mike and the Mechanics, though I did bump into Mike on Liverpool Lime St railway platform and shook his hand (I'd been to see Roger Waters and had to admit that to him). No, a new release of Genesis songs, tying in with the interview on the tv ,IS a decent piece of marketing and it's a nice offering at a good price.
Steve Hackett is a genius. This review is a blatant plug for those of you who haven't seen him live, doing his Genesis thing, to make a decision to go and find a Steve Hackett gig. He did leave the band a long time ago but that's not the point. His gorgeous, achingly searing solos, will stay with me for ever and his Genesis revisited II album is brilliant. AND HE TOURS!! I saw him at The Royal Albert Hall last year and on November 1 I'm off to Hammersmith Apollo to see him again. I'm not that interested that he moaned about not getting enough recognition ; just go and support the man by seeing him.
Often albums get released to test the water for a set of concerts. Oh how I wish that we fans could set a train going which would result in a Genesis tour. As for me, it's Steve Hackett on 1 November and Peter Gabriel on 3 December. And the wonderful Mike Rutherford has never stopped either!
