2.0 out of 5 stars Disappointing 28 Jun 2013
Format:Paperback
This slim volume is soon to be a a major film starring Ryan Reynolds, Jeff Bridges and Kevin Bacon. So I picked up the comic for a quick read.

R.I.P.D. is a police division of dead officers brought back to life to serve the Devil. In exchange for a personal mission, they sign up for 100 years in the division solving crimes beyond the realms of life. Nick Cruz was murdered and in exchange for his 100 years of service he gets the chance to find out who murdered him.

I didn't like this much even though it sounded as if it would have been right up my street. The things that Nick has to fight are less about the afterlife than odd creatures that were part myth-part alien. It was all a bit silly and messy. Not for me.

3.0 out of 5 stars A bit short 6 April 2014
By JBV VINE VOICE
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
I do love this story, but it's a bit on the short side.

The illustrations are excellent, and the story is good. If you want a really good graphic novel, read Watchmen or The Dark Knight Returns. They're both 5 star books.

4.0 out of 5 stars Men in Black meets Ghostsbusters 30 Mar 2013
By Alt - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
This volume collects issues 1 to 4 of R.I.P.D., originally published in 1999 and 2000. It's sort of like Men In Black mixed with Ghostbusters. Perhaps that's why it inspired a movie that, as of this writing, is in post-production.

Sheriff Roy Powell chases Hell Raisers, but he's been doing it for a century and he's about to retire. Nick Cruz is a dead cop who wants to know the identity of his killer. Heaven's lawyer makes him a deal he can't refuse, and he's soon employed (with a hundred year contract) by the Rest In Peace Department. Before he retires, Powell must train Cruz to kill creatures that aren't technically alive. Powell and Cruz complete their first mission together by journeying to a very warm place.

R.I.P.D. is a light and breezy break from all the graphic novels that purport to take demons seriously. The story is engaging and the dialog has enough snap and wit to set this apart from lesser efforts to merge demons with humor. The art is full of funny caricatures that avoid going over the top, setting the right tone for the amusing story.

4.0 out of 5 stars Random Comic Review: R.I.P.D 28 Jun 2013
By Joshua S. Taylor - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
There are a lot of novel ideas, and the comic is overall a good read. However the problem is that the book is way too short. It's hard to get invested in the characters and the world of the story, because it's over in a blink of the eye. I really wish there was more to this story, because I actually enjoyed the concept of the book. There are some creative and interesting story parts to this comic. The artwork is a little cartoony, but fits with the story well and I enjoyed it. The length of the book makes it feel rushed, and that makes things happen too quickly. Which I feel takes away from the enjoyment of the story. If you are looking for a quick and fun read, then this book is worth picking up because it's worth the read. I just would've liked more to the story.

4.0 out of 5 stars A fun read soon to be a movie! 20 Jun 2013
By EE - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I'll be honest, I liked this better than the Men in Black comics. Dark humor, good characters, interesting creatures and a fun premise. This makes me want to see the movie (even though Ryan Reynolds is in it) even more. I'm looking forward tot he sequel.
5.0 out of 5 stars great comic 21 Jan 2014

It has been many years since I have read a graphic novel, this was a great read. The story is unique and the art is incredible. Highly recommended!!
4.0 out of 5 stars Seen This Story Line Before 6 Jan 2014
By Jeffrey D. Sherwood - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
This was a good story and the premise is original. There is a plot line that was ripped right out of Men In Black, where the old agent is training the rookie to be his replacement. Other than that it was a fun read and the artwork is really good.
