Back in 1997 Chris Rock launched a broadside against much contemporary R&B with the song 'Champagne'. It opens with an aggressive monologue that runs: "Yo man, R&B sucks!/I mean there's a couple of people that can flow/But for the most part, the genre sucks/Just a bunch of people singin' over rap beats/Get a old rap record? Sing over it!/Now everybody talk about their label, label this, label that". This plainly-presented, unmixed compilation features plenty of radio-friendly hits from the last 30 years - like Gnarls Barkley's 'Crazy', Missy Elliott's 'Get Ur Freak On', Dawn Penn's' 'You Don't Love Me (No, No, No)' and Tweet's 'Oops (Oh My)' - that go some way to disproving Rock's point. But this inexpensive 3 CD box-set also features plenty of vainglorious, soulless and unsexy stuff - such as All-4-One's 'I Swear' and Color Me Badd's 'I Wanna Sex You Up' - that suggest the American comedian hadn't got things completely wrong about the genre. And over its 60 tracks R&B: The Collection also shows that when British acts slavishly imitate their American counterparts - as pop stars All Saints and Blazin' Squad do - they sound like inferior copies; when they are a bit more imaginative in the way that they use their inspirations - as grime's Kano and Wiley are - they sound a lot more persuasive.

This is quite a good selection of RnB hits from past and present.
It certainly fills some gaps in my CD collection. My personal favourites are the tracks by Joe, Akon, Christina Milian, Blackstreet, Boyz II Men, Outkast, Nelly and Usher. Wow! That's eight tracks! Admittedly some tracks have been played to death but there's is no denying that UMTV have put together another top quality compilation with most of the biggest names in modern RnB. This is bound to be a best seller!!

Quite a few of these tracks appear on other albums that I have, but that's to be expected, still not bad for the price.
