Summary

R in Action is the first book to present both the R system and the use cases that make it such a compelling package for business developers. The book begins by introducing the R language, including the development environment. Focusing on practical solutions, the book also offers a crash course in practical statistics and covers elegant methods for dealing with messy and incomplete data using features of R.

About the Technology

R is a powerful language for statistical computing and graphics that can handle virtually any data-crunching task. It runs on all important platforms and provides thousands of useful specialized modules and utilities. This makes R a great way to get meaningful information from mountains of raw data.

It presents useful statistics examples and includes elegant methods for handling messy, incomplete, and non-normal data that are difficult to analyze using traditional methods. And statistical analysis is only part of the story. You'll also master R's extensive graphical capabilities for exploring and presenting data visually.

5.0 out of 5 stars great book! 11 July 2014
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
I'm half-way through this book and, being an absolute beginner, I simply love it! It has been very useful in making me understanding the logic behind this language. It also helped me refreshing some statistics I had forgotten and I thank the author for that! :) Besides the clear explanation of the code, I also like the fact that it gives a good overview of the packages available to perform certain tasks and this is very handy for people (like me) who have no clue how to look for and choose the best one. I definitely recommend it!

In my opinion this could the best written book about R. Although it does not cover all facets of R what is presented is described in the best possible way.
I really like this book for basic statistics analysis in particular hypotheses testing, ANOVA, principle component analysis. I found it much better than The R Book especially for the way this book is formatted. It is really good a manual too: people in my research office seem to use this book very often.

4.0 out of 5 stars As good as Quick-R 13 Mar 2014
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
I have used Quick-R so many times, that I felt in debt with the author and decide to buy the book.

It is excellent in terms of contents. And includes a PDF version, which is something nice to have (you can't grep on dead trees).

I would have give five stars, but they decided to make it black and white, and some figures are illegible without colours. Although The PDF has colours.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best 'beginners guide' to R 25 Oct 2013
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
Simply the best book to buy to learn R with. Once you've gone through this, it is worth looking at 'The R Book', but start with this one!

5.0 out of 5 stars An excellent text 5 April 2013

Well written, extensive coverage also including some CRAN based packages, easy to read and browse, the latter more important when looking for 'point-help'. A good book.
