Product Description

Product Description

The RODE VideoMic Pro is a true shotgun microphone designed for use with camcorders, DSLR cameras and portable audio recorders as a source of primary and reference audio. At the heart of the VideoMic Pro is a high resolution 1/2"" condenser capsule that provides broadcast quality audio via a 3.5mm minijack connector (outputting the mono signal to both left and right channels). A super-cardioid polar pattern ensures that surrounding audio is minimised, and your recording is focused on the subject in front of the camera. An innovative suspension system separates the VideoMic Pro capsule and electronics from its mount, providing isolation from external physical factors that may cause unwanted rumble and vibrations in the microphone. Easily accessible on the rear face of the microphone are the power, filter and level controls. In addition to the microphone's native 40Hz-20kHz response a selectable high-pass filter at 80Hz is available, which will prevent low end noise such as air conditioners and traffic from being recorded. Below these controls are the level settings, which attenuate or boost the recorded level as required. The -10dB level attenuation (or PAD) is ideal for recording loud sound sources, such as live music, motorsport, or interviews where the subject is very close to the camera. The +20dB level boost is designed for use with DSLR cameras such as the Canon 5DMkII, Canon 7D, Canon 1D, Canon 550D/T2i, Canon 60D, Nikon D7000, Nikon D5100, Panasonic GH1 and Panasonic GH2. This boost in the microphone output allows the user to reduce the camera's preamp level (or mic-input level), effectively reducing the amount of noise generated by the camera's comparatively low quality audio circuitry. The VideoMic Pro provides over 70 hours recording from a single 9V battery, and is covered by RODE Microphones' industry leading 10 year warranty.

5.0 out of 5 stars shooting with the rode video mic 11 Jun 2011
By mrwillt
Very good piece of kit to have if your shooting on the 5d II, it is light and has a long battery life. the only worry is the jack cable, it will eventually break as it has a very thin and week feel, but you get a 10 year warranty. so the only real issue is that it doesn't come with a box to store it away when on the move as you will be if your a 5d shooter. a very important tip is that on the internal settings you must have the level turned all the way down one click away from the bottom to get a really crisp recording. if not there is a hiss.

4.0 out of 5 stars Strongly recommended 29 Mar 2011

Amazing sound for the size. The 20dB gain is a must for DSLR users and is a useful option with small camcorders and digital recorders. Build quality seems fine - time will tell. Rode warranty is excellent even if you have a problem in years to come.
If upgrading from the standard Videomic, don't expect an NT2-to-NT3 difference in audio quality, I shall be keeping my other Rode shotguns for using wth XLR cameras.
BIG improvement in sound from the built in mics in small camcorders.

you know a lot about sound recording because recording sound is every bit as hard (and technical) as recording video..If you are new to buying microphones and making videos, this might be the review for you :)
First it can record good sound but that's hardly surprising given the price and the make! The question is more like "do I need it?" and that's harder. This mic fits neatly onto the hot shoe of your dslr or camcorder which is the worst place to have it! If you have it on the camera it will pick up the sound of the image stabilization, buttons being operated and even you breathing...
So you either need to place it away from the camera or practice shallow breathing and ninja like camera operating skills.
Surprisingly this mic is quite heath robinson build. rubber bands hold it in place that pop off in the camera bag.
With lots of practice I managed to record a 30 second clip of great sound, just google alex sally dunnock singing..Quite impressive but I have had over 30,0000 views on youtube and yet to have a single comment on sound quality. Also if you are making videos to share it has to go through the sausage machine of youtube and is played back through other peoples computer speakers...
I learnt a lot using this mic, and there is one very important thing I did learn. More important than the mic is learning where to place it, when to use it, what sound to record and how to use it in the finished video. I can get better results from a cheapie microphone if I use it right than by using a good mic like this used as if all you need to do is put it on the camera and press go.
I have used a very cheap microphone and made a diy dead cat (using a washing up scrubber) , placed in woodland at dawn and got very good sound.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great with 5D mk2 or 7D 6 Dec 2011
Having had one of these on our 7D for some time, we decided to get a second for our 5D mkII.

Using this set to -20db and using custom firmware for the 5D has given so much audio control on the 5D that we can now record directly on it, with audio monitoring on headphones and a real nice rich sound.

Very impressed with this bit of kit, it has changed the level of "on-cam" audio we are able to produce dramatically. Just this weekend we came back from filming a heavy drum and bass night in london, and have usable on cam audio when we cut out to the live shots.

brilliant bit of kit, but found that on the 5D mkII - custom firmware is the way to go to get the best of the sound. Straight out of the box this sounded distorted or overpowered, or hideously underpowered if i dropped to -20db. Loading the custom firmware and changing the audio settings on the camera showed that this mic is fantastic, and it is the standard audio settings on the 5D mkII that were causing the problems. Don't just plug it in and get disappointed. Take the time to work out how to set it up for different events, and you will see it makes an unbelievable difference.

Couldn't live without it now!

5.0 out of 5 stars Just perfect 23 Feb 2011
This mic is a dream. I'm not in to sound but i hated all the options availeble. I bought the zoom first. Soon I was tired syncing my zoom h4n all the time with my canon 5d.
The best quality I get with this Rode, is to put it on +20, turn sound in manual and almost turn it down to about 15 %. The zoom is maybe a bit, just slightly better but not this easy and nobody else hears the differts so maybe it's just me. Sorry for the bad English (being Dutch is a hard thing ;-)

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent microphone: buy this one 19 Sep 2012
Verified Purchase
I purchased this microphone from Amazon.co.uk on Sept 17th, and it arrived the next day first thing in the morning on the 18th with Express Delivery... helpful service as needed it delivered direct to a client ready for filming on the day.

So straight out of the box and into a shoot and it performed fantastically well. Simple and intuitive to use, no complications. Shooting on my Canon 5D mark III with a 24-70mm lens, this mic is great for recording interviews and pieces-to-camera at close proximity. Even when filming in relatively noisy surroundings, in woodland with wind blowing through the leaves, it has recorded clean audio, with minimal if any distracting background noise. With your subject right in front of the lens, this picks up their audio as good as it gets. Being a broadcast cameraman used to using radio mics, I can honestly say the performance is equal to a professional radio mic when recording this close to the lens, without the possibility of rustle.

Following the advice from other reviewers, I set the mic level to +20dB, and turned the sound levels on the camera down to about 1/8 level, which produced these great results.

Other pros are that it is low profile and lightweight, so it won't weigh you down or get in the way. Slight negatives are I can see the rubber supports coming loose fairly frequently if on the move using handheld a lot, and the mic cable is quite thin, but I think this shouldn't cause any major issues, unless snagged hard, so handle with care. Essential to spend the extra £26 to buy the dead cat windshield for outdoor use.

Definitely worth paying extra for this mic over the predecessor if you're in two minds, its a good long term investment. 10 year warranty says it all.

3.0 out of 5 stars It won't solve all your problems
If you use this with Magic Lantern, maybe it will, but if you don't want to take the risk and brick your camera, it won't. It's an OK mic. I use it, but I would rather not. Read more
