Product Description

The smartLav is a professional-grade wearable microphone designed for use in a wide range of film, television and broadcast scenarios, or wherever professional quality audio is required in a discreet, portable format without the complication and expense of additional wireless equipment. With the smartLav the user simply mounts the microphone on the talent, connects it to a smartphone or tablet headset jack and records via the RODE Rec app for iOS, or any other audio app of their choice.By employing a high quality omni-directional condenser capsule the smartLav picks up sound equally from all around the microphone, allowing for versatility when mounting and ensuring a high degree of user-friendly operation.A foam pop shield is supplied to minimise wind noise and vocal plosives (hard 'b', 't' and 'p' sounds), as well as a durable mounting clip with in-built cable management. The smartLav is compatible with any audio app that accepts input from the headset connection, however it has been designed to pair perfectly with RODE's RODE Rec app for Apple iOS devices. RODE Rec turns the user's iOS device into a fully-featured field recorder, with a wide range of equalisation presets to suit various recording situations, in addition to professional editing functions and the ability to publish to SoundCloud and Dropbox direct from the app.

I love this Mic! Not only is it super quick to set-up - I love the ease of use of plugging it into the phone, doing a test and then getting going!

Just a couple of tips:

- Run your phone in 'Airplane' mode
- Throw the 'denoiser' filter on to the audio in Adobe premiere, it will get rid of the tiny amount of hiss you get (and it is tiny) and makes the audio super crisp!

For the price and for the ease of use, this is fantastic!

On board microphones are just not very good on Digital Cameras, they pick up all the background noise, noise from your hand movements when adjusting your grip, the sound of the autofocus from your lens, it does make you wonder why manufacturers haven't addressed this problem. Newer DSLR cameras now are offer a separate input, this is to accept an external microphone.
This does open a lot of options, with the type of microphone choice, Shotgun, Boom, or Lavalier to name a few. This still involves wiring your microphone into your camera, limiting how far away you can be from your camera. But plugging in a remote commander, will give you the chance to use a wireless type of microphone and therefore a lot more flexibility in both distance and movement. Cheap wireless systems can be unpredictable, giving results of interference or worse still, drop out on your recording. Wireless systems can get very pricey. On professional shoots, audio is normally recorded separately, then matched up later in post. This is where the Smartlav comes in.Essentially it's a Lavalier microphone that plugs into your smartphone and records the audio on this, rather than into your camera. The free app from Rode allows you to record in many formats as well as different sample rates. Very simple to use and the sound quality is excellent. All you have to do is give an audio indicator, in films they use a clapperboard, but a loud clap of your hands will do. This allows you to sync up the sound and vision later in post. The Smartlav gives you the flexibility of a wireless mic, but the dependability and sound quality of a wired microphone. Rode are known for their quality microphones and the SmartLav is no different, the sound is full and crisp, there is even an adjustment for levels within the app.

Finally a simple lav for the iPhone, great sound, and works with the video camera App too. What's not to like....oh yeah, just the short cable, could do with a longer line.

Highly recommended.

I have used this to record both on a blackbery z10 (parrot app) and xperia z1 (easy voice recorder pro) to good effect. Just try to research a suitable app with the ability to change the gain and sampling rate.

I bought this, and whenever you try to use the Rode app they make you pay like £6 for, it crashes. Not only that but when you can record, it has no top end, and lots of hiss instead. I bought a Zoom H1 recorder to plug this into, and although that doesn't crash, it still sounds useless. Avoid.

The sound is perfect, especially in combination with de Rode App.
I compared it with our Sennheiser wireless lavalier set and there is not much difference, just a little bit more noise.

A great microphone that works extremely well. I've used it on an iPhone 5, Nexus 5 and believe or not on my MacBook Air and it works very well and deliver a great sound quality every time.
The microphone may not seem much and to some it may sound too expensive. In my opinion it isn't expensive at all because the voice it records and reproduces is almost exactly the same as the actual voice.
The only reason I'm giving it a 4 star instead of the 5 star the microphone actually deserves is because the clip broke after just one use.
I contacted Rode in the UK and they quoted me for a new one but after a second persuasive email, they sent me one free of charge which I duly lost and never used.
My recommendation is if you don't know how to use the clip, and believe me there is a technique to it, watch a couple of YouTube videos that tell you how to connect the mic to the clip.

A nice, portable lavalier microphone that I use to record to my iPhone. It's good enough for basic work but there is quite a noticeable amount of hiss/noise that I've been unable to remove. The wind blocker/popper works well enough and the audio quality (when the input is above the hiss/noise level) is pretty good!

The Rode Rec LE application for the phone is a little awkward to operate, especially when deleting the recorded tracks when you've finished exporting them; On the iPhone, you must use iTunes to delete the duplicate tracks which take up a fair amount of storage space / duplicate tracks are required for exporting!

All in all, it's a handy little lavalier Microphone that has served me well so far.

A video that I shot using the lavalier can be found here; www.youtube.com/watch?v=c79QiRXOc6A
