Product Description

Product Description

The RODE Podcaster is a dynamic, end-address USB microphone that combines broadcast-quality audio with the simplicity of USB connectivity, allowing recording direct to a computer without the need for an additional digital interface. Including an audiophile quality 18-bit resolution, 48kHz sampling A/D converter, the Podcaster processes all of the analogue-to-digital conversion internally, bypassing the computer's lower quality on-board sound controller altogether. A headphone output on the microphone body provides zero-latency monitoring, so the user can hear exactly what is being recorded, free of delay or echo. The Podcaster features an internal pop filter, designed to minimise plosives sounds that can overload the microphone capsule and distort the audio output. It is fully compatible with Windows 7, Windows 8 and Mac OS X computers, as well as several Linux distributions. The microphone is bus powered and features a status LED to indicate operation. The Podcaster is ideal for podcasting, vodcasting, YouTube videos, voice recognition software, corporate videos and any production application that requires a simple yet professional voice-over microphone. It is also a convenient demo microphone for musicians and songwriters that prefer the convenience of a USB microphone but don't want to compromise sound quality. It can also be used as an iPad microphone for the Apple iPad (in conjunction with the iPad Camera Connection Kit and a powered USB hub) to provide high quality recording to various iPad audio applications such as Garageband. The Podcaster includes a sturdy RM2 microphone ring mount. For professional applications the optional PSM1 shock mount and PSA1 boom arm are highly recommended. The RODE Podcaster USB microphone is designed and made in Australia, and covered by RODE Microphones' industry leading 10 year warranty.

As others have noted this is good quality construction and great sound. The microphone is plug and play with most computers (including those running recent-ish versions of linux). This is a mic you'll want to use quite close up.

As a minimum you will need a mic stand. After a few weeks I also added a spider mount to eliminate noise caused by vibration. I also picked up a pop shield to reduce plosive 'p' and 'b' noises. Neither of these additions are strictly necessary but they enhance a quality product.

The only thing that would improve the mic would be a gain control. However, it seems to be set to quite a sensible level so I haven't found this to be a limitation in use.

I had become aware of this mic on a voice recording course, and decided to invest in one.
On receiving it I discovered it to be very well engineered, though bigger than I had imagined! I thought my little table-top mic stand might topple over with its weight!
Connecting it up I found it was very easy to set up, and I was soon trying out its performance.
Excellent sound quality, little discernible noise, plenty of sensitivity, good tonal response for the voice, and dead easy to use - just plug it straight into the USB socket.
All in all I am very pleased with it, though given its size I will probably invest in the anglepoise type stand that Rode sell for it.

While the description claims seamless working with mac, I have to dispute that claim. In fact it took me almost a whole day to sort it out, and pretty much only by luck. Restart probably worked, though I have no way of knowing for sure.
When inserted for the first time, it wasnt able to even recognize the mic.

Nevertheless, as always, amazon customer service was courteous and of course, after these hiccups it seems to be working.

Sadly, to achieve decent levels you have to boost the gain quite high. Pretty much all the way in fact, and that introduces fair bit of noise. Not as bad as some other mics, and nowhere near the usual levels of AT3350 lavalier mic which is just terrible noisy. Also with these levels the mic picks up slightly more of the room noise than it would be healthy...

Other than that I am fairly happy with the purchase and would be happy to recommend the mic as decent value for the money. If you are willing to invest 3-5 times more, keep looking. I've heard nice things about EV RE27, but of course that seems to be difficult to get in the UK and about 5-6 times of the price of podcaster.

Fantastic sound quality for voice over, easy to install and looks the part if customers visit. Bought with suspension and adjustable arm which we think is well worth the money. Only problem might be when we need to record a conversation. This mike might be to omni directional for more than one contributor but we haven't tried this yet, otherwise we'll have to set up another mike.

I spent a while pondering whether to get this or not - it seemed a bit lavish for my needs at the time. However, I'm truly thankful that I decided to get it!

First, this thing is much bigger than you might imagine. It's about the size of a medium sized air freshener aerosol. It's quite heavy too - probably weighing around 1lb or more? But don't let these things deter you - they all add to the quality feel of the device and it's robustness comes in handy if you're clumsy like me!

Sound quality is superb, as you'd expect. Be sure to google for the product and watch some of the demo videos that explain best placement and distance from mouth in order to get even better sound quality.

A green LED indicates when the mic is powered and, thankfully, this indicator is not too bright - it doesn't distract you at all unlike some other mics I've seen that nearly blind you - Røde have clearly thought carefully about every aspect of this product.

Underneath the mic is a socket for headphones and a small volume dial so you don't need to fiddle with your computer volume control if things get a little too loud. If you're a DJ you can configure most software to use the mic's headphone output socket for pre-queuing which is awesome!

The USB connector on the end makes it super easy to connect to your computer and on my Macbook Pro both the mic and the headphones were immediately identified and usable for sound input and output.

I've been using the mic for about a year and not had a single problem with it, Røde built this thing to last!

For best results I'd highly recommend getting the table stand and arm, and shock mount.
