This boom pole is very sturdy and comfortable to use despite its weight. You could get lighter poles made from other materials, but of course that means a big jump in price. A positive thing about the weight is when it's fully extended; you don't get any slack, which means you can move it pretty fast without any movement in the boom's structure. The only cons I have is the paper cylinder which the boom pole comes in. Now, I know it's not something you're supposed to use to carry it in, but I wish Rode had made some sort of carrying bag.

Pros:
- Foam grip
- Shock absorbing rubber rings at each extension section
- Two straps for securing external microphone cable
- Possible to run coiled cable inside

This is to be the most misleading product photo on Amazon. It suggests that the pole gets thinner as you go towards the base, making the whole thing look a bit thin and weedy. In fact, the pole gets progressively thicker, so that the base section, which is padded, is actually about 4cm in diameter. It's solidly built, and has cut-outs to allow a cable to run down the centre of the pole (although the XLR plugs on my cable wouldn't pass through the tube at the mic end - other cables might be fine).

I was experimenting with home-built poles, but I'm glad I gave up and bought this. It's a high-quality piece of kit.

In terms of weight, it's what you'd expect from aluminium, but no more difficult to hold than the monopod we had been managing with (which is carbon fibre and half the length).

I am very pleased with this purchase. It is a really well presented device. It is of excellent construction, and compares with items costing far in excess of this. It has the ability to have the microphone lead inside the boom, so it doesn't blow in the wind if used on a windy day. I am one of those people who are difficult to please, but I can honestly say I am delighted.

To be fair, you will know when you're holding it in your hand and I suppose it could be lighter, but if you are holding this up for a long period of time it's light enough to not get tired too quickly.
It has a good design, meaning you can put the microphone at the end and run the wire through the middle of the pole (if you want), reducing loose, messy and annoying wires getting in the way. (There are no instructions how to do this, but the rubber piece at the bottom comes off so you can push a wire and the connector piece through).
Professional and worth the spend. But ideally this could be a lot cheaper. If you're on a tight budget, think about DIY alternatives.
