Review

"An eloquent and eminently readable translation . . . much closer to the way the first Muslims experienced the Qur'an."
-Reza Aslan, author of No god but God

" While being faithful to the original, [Khalidi] succeeds in conveying linguistic shifts, from narrative to mnemonic, sermons to parables. And there is an innovative component: it is the first translation that tries to capture both the rhythms and the structure of the Qur'an. . . . This translation manages to give a glimpse of the grandeur of the original. . . . A magnificent achievement."
-Ziauddin Sardar, "The Guardian" (London)

"What sets Khalidi apart from his predecessors is his sensitivity to the sounds and many layers of meaning of the original as well as his skill in conveying them to an anglophone audience...Khalidi's introduction and bibliographic note are marvelously succinct, explaining the textual nature and structure of the Qur'an, its place in Muslim life, and providing a very useful summary of recent research and further reading...a landmark in the history of English translations of the Qur'an."
--Ziad Elmarsafy, "Times Literary Supplement"

Product Description

Considered in Islam to be the infallible word of God, The Qur'an was revealed to the prophet Muhammad by the archangel Gabriel in a series of divine revelations over many years after his first vision in the cave. In 114 chapters, or surahs, it provides the rules of conduct that remain fundamental to Muslims today - most importantly the key Islamic values of prayer, fasting, pilgrimage and absolute faith in God, with profound spiritual guidance on matters of kinship, marriage and family, crime and punishment, rituals, food, warfare and charity. Through its pages, a fascinating picture emerges of life in seventh-century Arabia, and from it we can learn much about how people felt about their relationship with God and their belief in the afterlife, as well as attitudes to loyalty, friendship, race, forgiveness and the natural world. It also tells of events and people familiar to Christian and Jewish readers, fellow 'People of the Book' whose stories are recorded in the Gospels and Torah. Here we find Adam, Moses, Abraham, Jesus and John the Baptist, among others, who are regarded, like Muhammad, to be prophets of the Muslim faith.

Hats off to Tarif Khalidi for producing a clear and at times lyrical translation of this foundational text for Islam. If you're at all interested in Islam or its central tenets, this is the translation to read. You can appreciate the text in all its subtlety and beauty without an overbearing gloss of interpretation by Khalidi or any one else. And the book is also beautifully set and bound with a bookmark ribbon to boot. This is THE edition to keep on your shelf for years to come.

Wordy but pleasant. 27 Sep 2009
By L. Hady
Format:Hardcover
Compared to other translations, this one at times feels like it is trying too hard. It is well structured, but has neither the exactness of the Alberry translation nor the eloquence of the Abdel Haleem translation. It is very powerfully put which i suppose lends it self to a certain type of reader/mood than other translations. I wouldn't put others off buying it, but I would recommend others first. Especially at the price.

Outstanding 18 Mar 2009
By D. Karjala - Published on Amazon.com

I picked this up because I always try new translations when they come out.

This is an accessible translation of the Qur'an, written in elegant but not pedantic English, extremely true to the Arabic without losing the poetic impact. The layout, size and format are so conducive to absorption and reading, that I stood some time in the bookstore reading before I purchased.

Among modern English translations, I think this will become a great contender.

A Nice Translation 9 May 2010

I desired a translation of the Qur'an which I could read through and think about on my own. This book was all that I had hoped for.

bought it for my 11y son. this is a word by word translation!! most meanings are LOST!! The Quran should not be translated; Its meanings should be translated. Even the names of the Sura's were translated wrong (for example, teh house of Imran! what was meant were the family and not the physical house!), because they were translated word-by-words instead of translated what each name meant! Quran came in Arabic and changing even a letter in it can make a huge difference in the intended meaning, thus any translation should be OF THE MEANINGS AND NOT OF THE WORDS. For those of you who do not know about the essences of the Muslim beliefs, there should not be a translation of the Quran; because many of the meanings and teachings will be lost in this case. If anyone wishes to translate, they should comprehend what is meant by each verse and then write its meaning in their own words. this is what I know, please correct me if you are knowledgeable in aqeda and think that I misspoke about this issue. Thanks
