`Quiver' is appropriately named for the bow hunting prevalent throughout the novel. Accidentally, Luke has killed his father in a bow-hunting accident and the novel starts seven months after the event. His mother Kate, whilst not holding him responsible is concerned for him. At the same time an ex-con from Kate's past, Jack, comes into her life. Luke takes off for their lodge in Northern Michigan, finding everything difficult and Jack and Kate follow him.
Meanwhile, there are other criminals interested in all the money Kate has been left and they pursue the threesome. What unfolds is a fast paced thriller with some surprising and also predictable events. Whilst clearly well written, `Quiver' takes a while to settle into. There are great characters and some fantastic narrative but there are times where it seemed that Peter Leonard was already thinking ahead without clarifying current events and I became a little lost in two different places.
Peter Leonard can definitely write and I'd certainly be happy to recommend this novel and read more of his work. The second half is quick and rapid, thoroughly engaging the reader and more than makes up for a slightly slower beginning. There are predictable elements but I think this is unavoidable within this genre.

It's great once in a while to read a lean mean thriller( or indeed any book) that doesn't ponce around with interminable descriptive prose or tedious exposition . Well hurrah and hussar for Peter Leonard for his debut novel Quiver is a well written thriller that moves like a rattlesnake on a bed of marbles. Plus it's twice as nasty.
Teenager and only child Luke has been involved in the hunting accident that killed his father .He is not too surprisingly moody withdrawn and a little surly and a serious worry for his mother Kate. One of her ex-boyfriends Jack appears back on the scene making a serious play to win her heart again but it's only seven months since the tragedy and Kate is unsure about him and his motives and more importantly the effect his being around will have on Luke.
This will become the least of her worries though for Jack is involved with a deeply unpleasant couple of renegades - Teddy Hicks- a monumentally thick redneck with a mullet ( a nailed down signifier of stupidity )and his foxy woman the more intelligent but no less amoral Celeste . Also part of the ill prepared plan to fleece the widow out of a large chunk of her inheritance is hit man DeJuan Green who would kill his own grandmother if it put him in credit.
Peter Leonard , like his illustrious father certainly knows how to construct a gripping story. The plot and the characters have a believable frisson (I never found myself questioning anything that happens and events have a blackly comic intuition )and he has a great ear for peppery dialogue and character motivation. He is also clever enough to cover his bases giving Kate a back-story that you just know will be brought into play later on.
Quiver is a terrific thriller , a relentless taut and enthralling tale told with economy and precision. I read it in two days .In fact alluding to my first paragraph I wish I could read a book as proficient and entertaining as Quiver every week. I look forward tremendously to Peter Leonard's next and can only wonder why it took him so long to write his first.

Bit of a chip off the old block. Builds slowly to a pacy finale.If you like early Elmore you will like this.
