Biography

by William Ruhlmann

Throughout a professional career lasting 50 years, Miles Davis played the trumpet in a lyrical, introspective, and melodic style, often employing a stemless Harmon mute to make his sound more personal and intimate. But if his approach to his instrument was constant, his approach to jazz was dazzlingly protean. To examine his career is to examine the history of jazz ... Read more in Amazon's Miles Davis Store

Most Helpful Customer Reviews

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful By D J F on 27 Sept. 2013
Format: Audio CD Verified Purchase
At just 31 minutes and 4 tracks this album definitely comes from the vinyl age - but what a superb treat. Those tracks are:

1. Dr Jackle (later revisited on Milestones in a very different interpretation)
2. Bitty Ditty
3. Minor March
4. Changes

Recorded just four weeks after the similar sounding Blue Moods this album is unjustly seen as a minor entry in Miles' canon, not featuring his classic quintet instead an all star line up happily including Milt Jackson on vibraphone. The playing is effortless, with the title of the album coming from Jackie McLean only playing alto sax on the two tracks he wrote himself (1) & (3). A lovely treat.
