A wonderful concept for a book to appeal to that species known as film buffs - a catalogue of character actors rather than the better known, and frequently transient, stars. Character actors often provide the best performances and most of them have long and varied careers. Of course, one of the big problems with character actors is the tendency to recognise their faces but forget their names. Which makes finding some of them in this alphabetically listed book a tad difficult. And the book is not terribly complete. Some character actors you would expect to find are absent, while others hardly seem to merit being included. A few might even have been more at home in the companion volume of movie stars. But those who did make it into the book are rather well served. Each has a photo - in black and white and not always particularly flattering - along with a brief physical description, biographical details and a film listing. For the more morbidly curious among us, the cause of death is usually included for those character actors who are no longer with us. A useful reference book and also nice to simply flip through. But I wouldn't have minded paying a little more for slightly better production values. And I think that work should begin on a larger, more complete, up to date edition right now.
