Review

Review Source: Professional Quilter Online Review Date: 2/23/11 Review Content: As long as I'm on a modern theme, I took a look at Quilts Made Modern by Weeks Ringle and Bill Kerr, founders of Fun Quilts, a contemporary quilt design firm. The book includes excellent material on design and how to consider all the elements (or layers) of the quilt. The authors offer tips on using fabrics in particular designs. I loved their tip for looking for fabric in your stash at an online retailer to see how the color looks with fabrics you are considering purchasing. The book includes complete instructions for making 10 quilts. What I also found valuable was the discussion on why particular fabric and quilting choices work with each quilt.

About the Author

Weeks Ringle and Bill Kerr enjoy writing about quilt design, as well as planning and making quilts together. Bill is the master pattern designer and diagram king, while Weeks enjoys writing the text and demystifying the design process for readers.

5.0 out of 5 stars sophisticated, timeless design 2 May 2011
By K. Platt TOP 50 REVIEWER
Format:Paperback
The inside cover of this book just makes my mouth water. The quilting and the colour sense is tops. The designs are simple but extremely effective and uncluttered. The big question in quilting is - Are you contemporary or traditional? This book is not ultra modern as the title perhaps suggests, it's more good design than anything else. Maybe 'modern classics' fits the bill better. Half the book is on design, but I don't think the authors are giving too much away on that score. I like the size variations and colour variations. Templates are given. 9 out of 10 designs are based on a grid and are suitable mainly for beginners. I'm hooked, I'd like to make just about every one and some in more than one colourway. This is a beautiful book with beautiful, sophisticated and timeless quilt designs but it is over-priced particularly in the UK. This review first appeared on Karen Platt's book review website.

5.0 out of 5 stars another great book 8 April 2011
Format:Paperback
I love the work of Bill and Weeks - they're modern without being artsy and write such clear directions. This book is great - plenty to choose from and wonderfully written.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent modern design book 7 Sep 2012
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
I have loved using this book. The authors Ringle and Kerr are introducing the reader to a fresh approach to quilt design. They are careful to fully explain the design process to the reader as well as providing clear instructions on how to make the 10 quilts in the book. It is the only quilt book I have ever read cover to cover it is brilliant. All the quilts are exactly the sort of thing that would look great around the home. There is also an excellent techniques section at the back that would give enough guidance for even a complete novice to follow.

Everyone, from my hip 20 something little sister to my 85 year old grandmother, have been very impressed with this book. I think the diversity of its appeal is testament to how clever and classic the designs are. I would also recommend the authors other books and magazine.
