Ms. Jinzenji is well known for quilting at the frontier: lots of negative (in her case, white) space, transparent tunnels, codes in piecework. All are represented in the remarkable quilts here.
If you're a quilter, you will love it because:
--Every quilt pictured in the gallery has full instructions in the second part. Instructions are given for more than 35 projects for quilts and smaller pieces such as samplers and pillows.
--Even the tiny pieces, tunnels, and transparencies have instructions, Japanese style. Not much color (not much needed) in the instructions, but a gray scale is used in an attractive way. Japanese-style instruction (in English) allows you to cross-check measurements and placements in an exacting way. Each step is further broken down into sub-steps where necessary. Even a large shape of color placed on a quilt is made up of smaller blocks of that color with their own instructions.
--The overall production says "quality book." Paper, presentation, and instructions are in my view of the quality of a Kaffe Fassett/Liza Lucy book, which I have always thought to be top notch.
--You will immediately think of ways to use one or more of these techniques in your own work.
If you're not a quilter, you will love it because:
--The match of creativity and detailed instruction may inspire you to become one!
--The initial gallery of her quilts in the book matches her quilt philosophy: lots of white space around the quilts, no props. The book itself has its own aesthetic that can be enjoyed by anyone.
--Just following along in her instructions to see a particular technique is an imaginative challenge.
