Product Description

Jared Harris and Sam Claflin star in this British horror film inspired by real events. In the 1970s Professor Coupland (Harris) encourages a group of his university students, which includes Brian McNeil (Claflin), to undertake a dangerous experiment. To test the theory that poltergeists are created by negative human energy, Brian and his fellow students use a disturbed patient as their subject. However, the results of the experiment prove to be both terrifying and deadly. The film also stars Olivia Cooke and Erin Richards.

Oxford Professor Joseph Coupland (Jared Harris) leads a pair of student researchers plus a camera man, known as the "quiet ones" to discover and cure the insanity of Jane Harper (Olivia Cooke) through experimental means. Dr. Coupland believes Jane has "negative energy" that manifests itself into telekinetics which can be controlled to cure the patient. Belief in the supernatural is not tolerated.

During the process, Brian (Sam Claflin) the camera man develops mutual feelings for Jane who has an imaginary demon named Evie. The time frame for this film is 1974 and it makes use of Slade's "Come On Feel the Noise." Early in the movie, the funding for the experiment gets cut so Brian volunteers to use cheaper lower quality film, just what I wanted to hear. Part of the movie is amateur hand held genre while some of it is not.

The film scare factor doesn't pick up until about an hour into it. It then has some bad minor clue twists which didn't help the film's cause.

Might work as a cheap rental. Not overpowering.

Parental Guide: 2 f-bombs. Implied sex. No nudity.

4.0 out of 5 stars Really enjoyed this film.... 30 July 2014
Okay, not the best film ever, but certainly better than the reviews here suggest. It's creepy, well acted, with a great story line. Basic outline? Students, along with their professor, spend time away in an isolated house doing a paranormal experiment on a young girl who they think is possessed. It is a solid film. Creepy, a few jumpy moments. I really liked this film.

1.0 out of 5 stars Sometimes The Quiet-quiet-BANG Ones come back 22 May 2014
The Exorcist and The Blair Witch Project have a lot to answer for. Both were horror masterpieces in their own right, but both spawned a host of regrettable sub-genre spin-offs. The Quiet Ones lifts elements of both - the innocent-girl-possession theme from the former and the found footage aspect of the latter - and the resulting mixture putrefies before our eyes.

In the early 1970s, at Oxford University, Professor Coupland is running some pretty dubious experiments on Wednesday Addams... I mean, Jane Harper. Coupland is trying to prove that Jane's telekinesis isn't supernatural, but rather a projection of some deeply entrenched psychological trauma. Any ambiguity or subtlety relating to this potentially interesting, if potty, hypothesis is dispensed with fairly early on, when creepy Coupland steals Jane, and a trio of horny students, away to a remote country house, where things start going bump and squeal and creak... and yawn.

This is a tension- and atmosphere-free exercise in boredom, occupied by cheap shocks of the quiet-quiet-BANG variety, and depressingly devoid of ideas. The main (but certainly not only) problem is simple: There isn't a single disturbing image in the film. Once again, scary is confused with startling. The filming process must have been a breeze: Two takes, cut, print; add the scares in the editing suite by inserting an annoyingly loud noise.

As Coupland, Jared Harris stalks the place like a silent movie monster with an appetite for scenery, whose only weapon is a single raised eyebrow. His smug students are played by Erin Richards and Rory Fleck-Byrne, floundering in the muddle between the film's alternating traditionalist and realist styles.

1.0 out of 5 stars My God This Was Boring! 30 May 2014
3 young Oxford students team up with a chain-smoking Professor to carry out and document an 'experiment' that involves a lass who is supposed to be haunted or possessed by a demon. They try to prove it is all just a case of mental illness which can be cured if they can somehow draw the negative energy or 'demon' out of her sub-consciousness or whatever. In the meantime, the lad operating the camera falls for the experiment's subject and skeletons inevitably fall out of the closet where the Prof is concerned. It's supposedly based on actual events. I hope those actual events were alot more engaging than this badly-acted crappola.

3.0 out of 5 stars well delivered script 19 April 2014
By timmy
A well put together performance, all of the acting is excellent. I am not a great fan of horrors but gauging the audience they were relieved to survive in the best "horror sort of way"! Most of the screaming moments were predictable, it is an ok film if you are horror indifferent, good to must see for the horror fanatics.
