Product Description

CD Description

Between 1983 and 1986, Steve Roach recorded what has proven to be his most unique and out of character work, for this signature synthesist that is. Originally commissioned to create this music for the healing arts - meditation and body work, Roach captures a virtual reflection of inner quiet, exploring the vastness of stillness. Many childhood memories emerged and helped to shape the music, returning composer Roach and listeners, to a place of simple innocence. Creating mind paintings from the lush green vegetation representing life itself, to the illumination of the sun, giver of life, to the timelessness of the atmosphere in which all exists, it is serene, peaceful, flowing and at times floating, with feather light textures. Along with his landmark release Structures from Silence, the Quiet Music series has been used for years in meditation groups, birthings and Hospice programs. In 1988, the selections from volume 2, the first side of volume 3 and a previously unreleased piece were combined onto the Quiet Music CD. More than ten years later and after numerous requests from listeners, the complete edition of this series is being released in a double CD, Quiet Music (Complete Edition). Disk 1 contains the entire selection from the previously released CD and disk 2 combines volume 1 and 3 and features a previously unreleased piece entitled Quiet Canon. This is considered early ambient music before the term became co-opted to describe music of todays electronic music of varying styles.

About the Artist

Steve Roach is recognized worldwide as one of the leading innovators in contemporary electronic music. His range of musical expression runs the gamut from the introspective soundscapes of Structures from Silence and Quiet Music (Complete Edition) to the explosive sequencer music of Empetus. Roach masterfully combined these two aspects of his style on the double album Dreamtime Return , considered by many critics to be a landmark in the new music genre.

I rarely publish reviews on amazon. It's currently 0:24am. It's late, I'm tired, but for the moment bed can wait because I am stunned to see I am the first to review this album. The urge to write a comment here is too great. I have no idea how much you know about Steve Roach, but if you have only just heard of him and this is the first review you have read then please read on. Steve Roach has been a prolific artist over the years. He is probably most famous for his epic 'Dreamtime Return'. Other groundbreaking classics include 'World's Edge' and 'Structures From Silence'. The brilliantly titled 'Quiet Music' most surely rate among these titles as one of his finest achievements. Produced in the early 1980's for several healing arts programs, 'Quiet Music' quickly established itself as a classic. As a pretty huge Roach fan (my friend Rhys will vouch for that) I would confidently rate 'Quiet Music' right up there with the titles mentioned above. The wind instruments featured heavily on disk 2 are truly inspired. I believe 'Sleep and Dreaming' is the most outstanding track on the album. A music odyssey lasting over 30 minutes will take your mind to a scene of spiritual harmony. The whole album shines with a positive vibe and after each listen I feel refreshed and cleansed. A note to all Roach fans who haven't heard this album - you will see another side to his music, a more gentle, relaxed and comforting listen compared to his trademark sounds.

I have so much respect for Steve Roach. I can only dream of producing music like this. I wish I could carry on writing about 'Quiet Music' but words, however positive, cannot do justice to this music.

I hope this 'review' has been helpful.

One of the Few Perfect Recordings! 24 Feb. 2001
By Bladerunner B26354 - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD
The album title means just what it says! Steve Roach's music really is in a class by itself, which is why I favor nearly all of his albums. "Quiet Music" was produced about the same time as "Dreamtime Return," and the themes are similar--except that QM was not recorded in Australia. This album is perfect to listen to while reading, writing or as a cure for insomnia. Roach's use of the synthesizer is nothing short of wonderful, and the sound he uses and combines with others helps me to rest and fall asleep when I really need it.
Let's face it, after a busy day, sometimes you don't want to deal with people until tomorrow. "Quiet Music" gives you a reason to do nothing, to change nothing. The ambience and crescendos of Roaches instruments seems to be tuned directly to my consciousness, like candy for the brain. When I listen to Roach, I never fail to put REPEAT ON before I press the start button. "Quiet Music" puts me in the exact place I want to be: quiet, peaceful and undisturbed. For me, I can actually see wide open spaces, clouds, nothing but total freedom when I listen to "Quiet Music." I'm not trying to be dramatic, I'm just telling you how it is.
In these senses, QM is theraputic. The various tracks are so perfectly blended together it's as if the whole CD is one big ocean of floating music. It can be effectively used to dissolve stress (especially while on the computer), anxiety and irritability. Roach knows what he's doing with his various instruments, synthesizers, woodwinds, and some he made himself. It's a combination of percussion and ereathral muscial patterns that is sometimes hard to describe, but Roach's music is strangely harmonious, synchronized, agreeable. My only advice is don't wait if you don't have "Quiet Music." Buy it today! My top recommendation.

My favorite music for massage and meditation 12 Sept. 1999
By Peter T. Duffy - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD
When I saw the 1988 release of Quiet Music on CD I burst into tears. My cassettes of QM had become so worn I played them rarely. When I saw this version I promptly bought two copies. I was so happy to see all of the music on 2 CDs. Mr. Roach's music has been so wonderful for me to listen to. I gave a set to my massage theratist who fell in love with it. All of her clients are asking about it. It is perfect at filling space with, as the title says, Quiet Music. I have had Stuructures from Silence and Western Spaces on CD for a while and they fill other kinds of roles in my musicscape. This is the quintessential CD for the most reflective of times.

Contemplate 3 Aug. 2000
By Mark Goldsworthy - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD
This indeed is quiet music, designed to provide an ambience rather than take a focal point. And my does he do it well...
I have quite a few of Steve's albums but I find Quiet Music to be the one I return to again and again.
Providing wonderful moods of ebbing synth washes it flows over, around and through you Air and light is serenely beautiful. Running at about thirty minutes it always makes me choke a little as find the imagery it creates to be on a very personal level. I'm thankful that Quiet Music finds just the right balance - not too uplifting not to dark.
Music to make one think.

Mind expanding 20 Feb. 2002
By "postalblowfish" - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD
Ambient music is amazing, no matter what you are doing, it totally stops the flow of time in the mind's eye. You could sit all the way through this amazing collection and not even realize you've been sitting there for about 3 hours. The music is transportational, it takes you to your own, tranquil, quiet place. It's different for every person, and many times different on every listen. The only reason it gets 4 stars is one track features waterfall noises in the background, which I find very corny and new-agey, and it defeats the purpose of trying to find your own quiet place. But that aside, the album is brillient, if you ever wanted to get into ambient, this is a great place to start.
