Product Description

2013 sophomore effort from this Indie duo featuring Dexter Tortoriello, best known for his work with Dawn Golden and Rosy Cross. Houses is comprised of just two poignantly creative musical souls based in Chicago. A married couple in real life, the enduring union of Megan Messina and Tortoriello has engendered what is their second symphonic feat, A Quiet Darkness, the follow-up to 2010's critically-acclaimed debut, All Night. A Quiet Darkness presents not only an aural feast, but a tale to follow - a tale of unrequited love which unfolds in the midst of a nuclear disaster. The album represents the journey of an enamored husband and wife desperate to reunite, yet kept apart by destruction and chaos. Each song on the album represents an abandoned house along the Highway 10 in California, where the fictional lovers so bravely trek in search of one another only to be kept apart by death's eternal embrace.

This album, is beautiful. The combination of male and female vocals on almost all tracks is a real pleaser. Just look to the first three tracks and then, "Carrion" and "Smoke Signals". The album is wonderful in its production. It is calming and soothing and it lures you in from the beginning. But it's like that pretty girl you've been eyeing for an age, and when you finally talk to her she answers everything with, "Whaaaaatt?". That's the album's problem, once you get past the beauty, the album is superficial. Don't get me wrong, the opening that consists of "Beginnings", "The Beauty Surrounds" and "The Big Light" are amazing songs. The album's opener is powerful and becoming, and like the rest of the album, it is a long song, running just over five minuets, but it doesn't become bloated.

"The Beauty Surrounds" is the track that caught my attention to this Los Angeles Indie duet comprised of Dexter Tortoriello and Megan Messina. They remind me a little like a different shade of Beach House, just not as vibrant maybe, just up there in quality with "Bloom". I feel "A Quiet Darkness" can loose itself, it's an album they takes you away too far, so far that you want to be brought back. "The Big Light", shows the decline in quality after the opening two songs until we get to the last two, "The Bloom" and "A Quiet Darkness" which feels like a two parter.

The former song, feels like Shoegaze and Dream Pop in one, and amongst the indie vibes on the album, it is those two elements that I like about the band. They manage to finish strongly which some bands can struggle to do. "The Bloom" is ethereal and it's thinking music, music to lie in the sun on a grassy hill watching over the horizon; it's music of a different place. Then the final song, it louder in comparison.

Been replaying this band like crazy lately! 1 Jun 2013

Closest thing I can think of to this band, in terms of mainstream music, is Coldplay. Great piano, vocals from a great male lead, highly ephemeral, soothing, soulful, and at times, tear inducing.

I discovered this artsy duo through a recommendation of another edgy and amazing artist Rob Rowe of Whitewaits, formerly of the band Cause & Effect... after reading his facebook post of the new release by "Houses" titled; "A Quite Darkness" and clicking upon the provided link that directed me to [...]

One click and a short listen and I had to have it! Every arrangement on the CD was a true work of art! I encourage you pick up a copy for your collection... its truly a musical opportunity to listen to an artist paint 12 beautiful pictures with song.

Absolutely Amazing 15 Sep 2014

This entire album is amazing. I first heard of them during an episode of The Originals and Beginnings was playing. I of course had to find out immediately what band was playing. I came across Houses and LOVE THEM. My favorite song other than Beginnings is A Quiet Darkness which is hauntingly beautiful. Can't wait to hear more.

I love this album. The songs are great, the melody beautiful and texts great. Everytime I listen I find something new and wonderful. I have not heard about the band before I bought it and it was a nice surprise.
