I read this book on kindle in less than 24 hours whilst on holiday in Sicily recently. Anyone interested in researching family history, particularly with military connections, will find this book fascinating and instructive. It is both a voyage of discovery about his father's military life and the unexpected discovery that he had a completely unknown and separate family. Well researched and objectively written I feel its a great shame the two families couldn't have spent more time together earlier in their lives. But perhaps without the key secret and the surrounding mystery there would not have been a story or even the need for the research and discovery. The author proves he too is a quiet authority.

I have to confess that this isn't usually the type of book I read,so this was quite a departure.I'd heard on the grapevine that the book was about to be published, and the subject matter certainly intrigued me.Would it turn out to just another average read,or have that something extra to keep me interested and entertained ?

Well I have to say this book is certainly worth the effort,as it follows the pretty extraordinary life of the author's Father. It's obvious that so much research and effort has gone into tracing the life of this man, through his years in the Army to his final days as a much respected Publican in a small Gloucestershire village.A labour of love certainly, one can only commend the author's attention to detail interspersed with some very funny anecdotes along the way.

I'm glad I got the chance to read this excellent book, despite it being pretty far removed from my usual subject matter.A recommended read.

I have just completed this book and throughly enjoyed it. The book is informative, funny and touching. What a tribute a Son can do for their Father.
This book has a lovely blend of military history and real life insight.

Well researched and with a wicked twist in the tale. I know Alan Gaunt well and admire what he has achieved.
