I think the name says it all - "Quickstart"; i.e. not a 'complete course'. However, depending on what your needs are, it's an extremely well constructed course. The format is basically about 14 conversations of common 'phrase book' type situations (meeting friends, catching an aeroplane, taxi, bar, cafe, booking a room, sightseeing etc.). Each conversation is presented with a minimum of explanation and then you listen. Then a very jolly, posh-sounding sort of girl explains the grammar and vocab, and you listen again. Then she gets you to construct your own phrases based on the nuts and bolts you've been given, and finally you listen again.

It's meant to be an audio-only course, but all the language is written down in a booklet if you want. (I transfered both CD's to my mp3 player and just used the audio - so it's perfect for the car, or walking to work -- no-one need ever know you're trying to learn German).I bought this in preparation for a few days in Germany recently and found it very useful. I listened to it on the way to the airport, on the plane, then on the train to Dusseldorf. When I arrived I felt confident enough to go and get a beer and a meal, ask the way to my hotel and so on. Not bad for only having lstened to it that day.

If you're serious about learning and mastering the language then perhaps this is not for you. But if you want to re-aquaint yourself with a language that you once had a smattering of it's great for getting back into the sound of the language and giving you the basic vocab (you also cover the numbers and most of the prepositions and pronouns you'll need for tourist use). Coupled with a phrase book it could get you easily through a holiday in Germany.

The presentation of the conversations is quite well-paced too, so there's adequate time to practise structures without getting bogged down and bored. good value for money and it does exactly what it says: gives you a 'quick start'.

This could be excellent. The format is great, tell you what you are going to hear, and the words you need, hear a conversation, then recap, with time to practice. Should be great.

Two niggles.

Firstly - The chirpy, patronising, presenter who keeps on "Speaking In Quotation Marks" all the time as she introduces each section, is a bit of a pain, although bearable.

Secondly - They emphasise the informal modes of address. Yea, right, the forms you use to talk to your German friends.
(Except you've just bought a basic language course. What German friends are you going to use it on? Why didn't they emphasise what you really need instead of some mythical situation. It's as bad as cheesy chat up lines in an old fashioned phrasebook!)

BUT

The big annoyance is that they have seen fit to put stupid, pointless, meaningless, inane, musical jingles between every section. (Every minute or so, it seems.) Each and every one wastes your time to no purpose whatsoever.
Do they think the people listening to this course are such total morons that they won't stay with it unless a ridiculous bit of "music" is repeated every few seconds?

This could be a good buy, but only if your tolerance levels are very, very, high.
