Product Description

In this first volume of Neal Stephenson's genre-defying epic, Daniel Waterhouse, fearless thinker and courageous Puritan, pursues knowledge in the company of the greatest minds of Baroque-era Europe in a chaotic world where reason wars with the bloody ambitions of the mighty, and where catastrophe, natural or otherwise, can alter the political landscape overnight.

The Baroque Cycle, Neal Stephenson's award-winning series, spans the late 17th and early 18th centuries, combining history, adventure, science, invention, piracy, and alchemy into one sweeping tale. It is a gloriously rich, entertaining, and endlessly inventive historical epic populated by the likes of Isaac Newton, William of Orange, Benjamin Franklin, and King Louis XIV, along with some of the most inventive literary characters in modern fiction.

Audible's complete and unabridged presentation of The Baroque Cycle was produced in cooperation with Neal Stephenson. Each volume includes an exclusive introduction read by the author.

Not really a review, more a caution - this item is in fact the first book in the Baroque cycle, but is ONLY the first book (of 9)! You really want to buy the same named book that contains the first 3 bits together (ISBN 0099410680 I think), as otherwise its hard to buy the 2nd and 3rd bits (King of the Vagabonds, Odalisque).

Reiterating... 21 April 2006
Format:Mass Market Paperback
I made the mistake of buying this book along with "Confusion" and "System of the World". Finished this one last night, picked up "Confusion", and was most disappointed to discover it started with Book 4! So I owned books 1, 4, 5, ... What a pain.

If you're interested in reading the whole set (which I am) don't get this one, get the bigger one with the same title.

I agree with both reviewers (though any bit of the cycle deserves five stars!) - This is the book of the same title, but consisting of only ONE THIRD PART, of the original Quicsilver. Here are the details

"Quicksilver" is now divided up and published in three: "Quicksilver", "King of the vagabonds", and "Odalisque".
"The Confusion" has been split in two: "Bonanza" and "Juncto"
"The system of the World" into three, "Solomon's Gold" "Currency" and "The System of the World".

So nothing new, sadly. Wish it were. You have been warned!

If you don't know what I'm talking about, youre really lucky - you have a treat ahead of you. Start with Quicksilver, and have yourself a ball!
