By Mr. Stephen Kennedy TOP 500 REVIEWER VINE™ VOICE
Format:DVD
A barely passable Michael Keaton film (assuming your standards are low), with a little Michael Caine thrown in for good measure, neither Michaels are stretched in this thriller.
It's one of those muddled 'internationally funded' type affairs, with messy plot and too-many-cooks feel about it. Keaton is a high-flying financial troubleshooter who has concerns about the books of a movie his company is finacing in Monaco. He flies out to investigate. Caine plays the alcoholic, past-it star of the movie. When Keaton arrives, there is an assassination which for muddled reasons he finds himself the patsy for, and he goes on the run, bumping into a beautiful french woman who may or may not have the answers he needs. When his child is kidnapped to flush him out, he goes on the offence, enlisting the has-been actor (Caine) for support.
There are no real thrills, and not much whodunnit element either - why two actors would muddy their CV with a straight to DVD effort like this is the biggest mystery.
However, they give it their best, and with a large suspenson of belief, it's at least possible to sit back and enjoy the scenery in places, making it almost worth the bargain basement price.
Almost, but not quite.

Michael Caine gets second-billed in tax-shelter quickie Quicksand despite racking up barely 15 minutes' screen time as a faded action movie star (and part of that is stock footage from Shadow Run). In fact, for most of the film you'd be forgiven for not knowing he was in it as Michael Keaton's banker finds him self somewhat ridiculously set up as an assassin by Russian gangsters using a non-existent movie in Nice to launder money. The kind of movie people make to pay the rent and which premieres as an in-flight movie, it's more professional looking than most of Geoffrey Reeve's output largely due to a capable director (John Mackenzie), which means that it's at least competently made rubbish. As usual with Reeve it's the undernourished plot that's the problem - everything's too pat and delivered too much on a platter for the half-dimensional characters and it never makes much use of its locale or premise as it connects the dots in the incredibly predictable plot. Mackenzie tries to compensate by keeping it moving, but it's a long way from The Long Good Friday.

Quicksand was directed by John Mackenzie, who lensed the exciting 'The Fourth Protocol', and stars Michael Keaton and Michael Caine. With such an excellent triumvirate, it's a wonder then that such a plain-feeling, unexciting thriller has emerged. When Keaton's highly touchy and particular financial officer flies to Monaco to inspect a company's finances and becomes rapidly embroiled in a murderous conspiracy, it feels entirely expected. That the pretty assistant with the moral qualms working for the bad guys tries to help him feels entirely unsurprising. Somehow even the bad guys manage to feel unimpressive despite some heinous deeds. The trouble is that we've seen it all before, and we've seen it better. It doesn't help that the film quality is extremely poor, the images of this 2003 thriller looking so grainy for the majority of the film that I could have been watching Mackenzie's superior '80s thriller The Fourth Protocol instead. Caine is also criminally under-used, his cranky actor character barely having any meaningful role to play for the majority of the film.
Only Kathleen Wilhoite shines among the cast, sterling as Keaton's intensely loyal P.A. who's supposed to be on her maternity leave and instead finds herself waddling around trying to save him, and fending off probing interviews from the FBI.
The action is largely limp, although there are some slightly shocking revelations of the criminal gang's real business practices, the conspiracy is predictable, and its solution is also almost as predictable, with an obvious email macguffin and a limp ending.
You've seen this before, and better. Look elsewhere.
