Product Description

Synopsis

This timely book provides the general reader with a clear, succinct introduction to the diaconate and addresses the perplexing and commonly-asked questions and myths that have been raised about deacons, their sacramental identity, their functions, and their relationships. Although the position of deacon was commonplace in the early church, the order became a transitional one from the 6th century until Vatican II reinstated the post of "permanent" deacon in the late 1960s. Since then, the diaconate rapidly became the fastest growing of all church vocations. While many Catholics are aware of deacons, most have very little idea why the diaconate was renewed as a permanent order of ordained ministry or even why deacons exist! In addition, more than 90% of deacons are married, which adds to the confusion of Catholics who have only experienced a celibate clergy. Now they are presented with a predominantly married clergy involved in the leadership and service of the Church. This book answers such commonly asked questions as: Just who and what is a deacon? After all these centuries, what led the Council to restore the diaconate as a permanent order of ministry?

What sort of training and formation do deacons receive? How does a deacon balance family, job, and ordained ministry? Can a deacon be pastor of a parish? Taken together, these questions explore the role of deacons in the contemporary church, the formation of deacons, what it is like to live as a deacon, and the role of deacons as ministers of the word, the liturgy, and as apostolic leaders in service.

What is a Deacon? 7 Jun 2009
Format:Paperback
I am considering becoming a Catholic Priest, however at the age of 50 I feel that I might be too old. However I feel most strongly that God is calling me to serve him. So I looked at how I may fulfil this calling in another way. The result of this searching was the Diaconal Ministry. I knew nothing about it and while searching for information on this subject I was directed to this book. It may not answer every question as I would expect. However the answers are such that I can go back to my Priest and talk it over with him and come up with an answer. I understand the roll and function of a Deacon better as a result of this book. I also understand the relationship of a Deacon to ordinary life. As a result of the book I regret not having listened to God before now and answered his calling.

"Diaconate for Dummies" 16 April 2009
Format:Paperback
Many of the questions that both laity and deacons themselves ponder. An essential simple aid for all who are interested in the diaconate. As we see the decline in numbers of priests in the United Kingdom, we will also see an increase in the number of Deacons as well as stronger role for the laity. This is a a snapshot of the workings of the Diaconate, for those who wish to know more about this historical office that is once more impacting on the religious life of more and more people.

Deacon John Torr. Clifton Diocese, England.

Dispels the mystery and ignorance about deacons 26 Mar 2006
By S. Kern - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
I am applying for the diaconate program in our diocese, and this fast-reading book was an excellent introduction to the role of the deacon in the Catholic Church. Despite the renewed emphasis on deacons since Vatican II, there is still a lot of ignorance about the deacons' responsibilities and the nature of their sacrament of ordination. This book explains how deacons are different from priests and bishops, and yet how they are similar, as well. I have found it invaluable in my discernment about being called to the diaconate.

Great Explanation for Roman Laity, Fair for Others 13 July 2005
By John A Lee III - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
With the restoration of the vocational diaconate in several denominations has come a broad based lack of understanding of what and who deacons are. This is true of both laity and clergy. This little volume goes a long way towards addressing that lack of understanding.

It is written by a Roman Catholic for Roman Catholics with Roman deacons in mind. On this subject and for this audience it is a superb book on the subject. Even so, it has some information that may be of use to Episcopal and United Methodist people as well. Some of the theology presented is distinctly Roman. Other, such as the theology of service and the ministry of all the baptized has wider use.

The book is presented in a question and answer format. Typical questions about the diaconate are posed. The author then answers them in a logical and complete manner. The book is divided into eight general categories. A look at the category headings should give any reader an idea where to look to see if a particular question is examined. For example, one of the sections is on the liturgical ministry of the diaconate; readers would therefore know to look in that section to see about deacons presiding over baptism.

This is a great explanatory book and is easy to understand.
