Book Description

30 Jan 2011 1848856059 978-1848856059
In an age of austerity and uncertainty, can Britain s security be assured - and its place in the world maintained? The British government's Strategic Defence and Security Review, released in October 2010, was long overdue. The former strategy did not account for the challenges faced by the armed forces in a post-9/11 world, and the financial crisis had rendered the defence programme unsustainable. Written by the foremost independent security and defence experts, including Hew Strachan and Malcolm Chambers, this vital new book analyses every important facet of the review: the impact of the spending cuts; decisions on military equipment; relationships with allies; intelligence sources; and the ethical dimensions of modern security policy in a globalised yet disordered world. A Question of Security sets the core agenda for all wishing to understand the defence problems Britain now faces - and for those in government who will have to continue to answer these difficult questions in a generational moment for UK defence policy.

Product Description

Review

'It is now commonly accepted that we have a significant four part challenge across the Nation's security and defence portfolio. We have to develop a more strategic posture on the back of the National Security Strategy while wrestling with an extremely challenging resource picture, delivering success in the ongoing war in Afghanistan and reinforcing contingent capability so that we are better ready for the unexpected. Against this backdrop this book is timely and pertinent; the questions it asks and the articles that debate the key issues are comprehensive and thought provoking. A valuable reference for the informed and interested.' --General Sir David Richards

This book is current and up to date, a fascinating read, It also shows in my opinion how we are neglecting our armed forces and letting down those that lay their lives on the line each and every day for us. As an example we quibble about spending 2 billion on aircraft carriers that protect our country and way of life but dont flinch when the banks need 24 billion as a bail out ! is it me or is this world just twisted?
