5.0 out of 5 stars Another Solid Outing For Jessica 7 Jun 2010
Format:Mass Market Paperback
Donald Bain's 'Murder, She Wrote' series based on the television show of the same name continues it's winning formula in 'A Question of Murder'.

This time around we find mystery writer Jessica Fletcher attending a murder mystery weekend, as a celebrity author, located in an old mansion which is now running as a hotel. A stage play spanning the whole weekend takes place, where someone is murdered and the guests must form teams and try and figure out the mystery. However, when the actor playing the victim in the play is murdered on stage in real life, all eyes (even the lead police detective's) fall to Jessica to uncover the murderer before the weekend is over.

As usual there is a range of different characters, many of which serve as possible suspects, others to aid Jessica in her investigations. Some of them simply serve their purposes, while others are genuinely fun characters, such as Jessica's fellow author GSB Wick who writers supernatural themed mysteries set in the deep south and manages to keep her identity a secret, never giving away her full title, only ever being refereed to as Georgie.

Although there is nothing new here if you have read any of the previous books in the series, 'A Question of Murder' is still an enjoyable mystery, which is easily read in a couple of days, or I'm sure in a few hours if you wanted to read in in one sitting. Bain manages to weave a clever mystery or two into the book, which if you are observant, you will have sussed out before Jessica's reveal at the end. The clues are there, just as they are in the TV series, and as the book is told in first person, you find yourself beginning to think like Jessica.

5.0 out of 5 stars Jessica Gets Trapped in the Snow 9 May 2006
By Dennis Phillips - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Mass Market Paperback
Donald Bain has turned out another highly entertaining entry in the "Murder She Wrote" series and in some ways this entry is the best so far. I do however have a couple of problems with this book and would prefer to get my objections out of the way in short order. The first problem that I found is a common problem among Yankee Americans who are attempting to be cute with Southern accents. Mr. Bain, y'all is a plural word and should never be used in the singular. This is a grammatical sin that the author commits several times in this book and I hope to never find this error in any of his future books. The second problem is an ongoing occurrence in this series and that is Jessica's obvious dislike of fat people. Although her friend Seth is rather plump she never fails to take a dig at any other fat character that shows up in these stories and if she uses the term corpulent one more time I think that I will scream.

That said I must say that this was one of the more enjoyable books in this series. Very seldom is it possible for Mr. Bain's readers to solve the mystery before Jessica does but in this case it is quite doable. There are the usual twists and turns in this story and one must pay very close attention but all of the clues are provided in this case which is a policy that I wish Mr. Bain would hold to more often.

As usual Jessica is a delight except of course when she is picking on fat people and the rest of the characters are an intriguing bunch to say the least. Most interesting is Jessica's fellow mystery writer from New Orleans who puts the ghosts that she sees into her stories but she is also unfortunately the one who goes around saying y'all in the singular. Another mystery writer is also on hand for the murder mystery weekend at this historic Berkshires hotel and he fills the shoes of the character one would most like to see murdered. Add in a real police inspector who is working his first murder case, the fictional Deputy Dolt, an old hotel with a lot of secret passages and a fierce snowstorm and you get a highly entertaining book. In fact, among the books in this series that do not feature the Cabot Cove gang this is probably the most enjoyable.

2.0 out of 5 stars Please get your facts straight, Mr. Bain 29 Jun 2007
By Tigger - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Mass Market Paperback
The back of the cover states that the story takes place in the Berkshires. Anticipating a story set in western Massachusetts, the location of the Berkshires, I was surprised to learn that the author actually set the book in Connecticut.
At the beginning of each chapter, the author asks a question about a mystery writer. One of the questions is "which author features cats and dogs in her books? The answer is not Lilian Jackson Braun, but the author says that is the correct answer. I get very annoyed when people write books but don't bother to look up the facts. If you don't want to be factual, then use a fake setting, and don't ask questions that have real answers.
