Product Description

After a scientific experiment goes horribly wrong during a demonstration, a scientist finds himself trapped in an alternate reality that bears some similarities to our own, but also has some striking differences. In this other reality the Second World War had never occurred, mankind had not yet traveled into Space and Mt. Everest had not yet been conquered. Also in this other reality he is no longer a scientist but a well known author. He also finds that he is married to a beautiful woman who he instantly falls in love with but who his alternate self never cared for. He has some difficulty convincing anyone that he is not actually who they think he is. With the help of a physics professor who believes his story, he finally manages to convince his 'wife' that he is not the man she knew before. After a personal tragedy in this alternate world, he finds himself back in his own world and desperately trying to locate the woman he fell in love with in the other world. Little does she know, however, that her life depends on him finding her.

Romantic time-travel love story starring Joan Collins and Tom Bell.

Tom Bell plays a Physicist who gets caught up in a 'random quantum physics' experiment which inadvertently sends him off into a 'parallel universe'. Once there, and after 'finding his feet', he falls in love with a woman who is his present wife, but is about to divorce him. Having 'reconciled' their union, he then discovers she has a fatal heart condition that could have been cured in the 'other' world, but is incurable here, because the necessary treatment has not been discovered. Suddenly, he is sent back to the original universe, and has to seek out the same woman who won't even recognise him, and does not know she is ill.

An unusual film with a haunting theme with a few unpredictable little details. Also stars Denholm Elliot and Johnny Briggs.

Until recently hard to come by on DVD. Although if it's now been remastered, why no Blu-Ray edition? I remember watching this film on TV as a kid and always remembered it: A scientist gets transported to a parallel Earth to find his life quite different over there. Of course a bit of a Sci-Fi chesnut now, but quite novel when John Wyndham first wrote 'Random Quest' - It's original and far more better title back in 1961. Acting wise, I'd always found the late Tom Bell's style rather hard bitten, abrasive and unlikable. So this is perhaps his most temperate peformance captured on film. And likewise - although reputed to be a bit of an ego-centric Diva, Joan Collins here radiates in both a wry intelligence and a winning beauty. Story wise, although not driven by action, the story is perhaps far more engaging and involving by it's good dialogue and solid acting. It wouldn't go amiss as a stage play. However, this is a great slice of how things used to be done with effective economy rather than the overblown expensive eye-candy which today just lives you feeling cold and empty! So for nostalgia buffs and good solid story buffs everywhere, why not take this disc for a spin?
