Just a brief suggestion, don't buy the paperback. The lack of pictures of Mr Blessed's jaunts are a let down.
However the narritive is not, reading like a boys adventure book. You are quickly carried away by Mr Blessed's imagination and love for adventure. It is very easy to imagine his booming voice carrying you along. Worth a read.

I must first admit to being something of a fan of Brian Blessed ever since he appeared in the movie "Flash Gordon" many years ago. It's rare in this day and age to find such a character. In turns he comes across as mad, funny, kind, caring and always great fun. It turns out he can write rather well too...

"Quest For The Lost World" charts Brian's attempt to climb one of the world's highest peaks, and his journey to Venzuela to climb the plateau that inspired Sir Arthur Conan Doyle to write "The Lost World" - yes, it is based on a real place.

Brian is disarmingly frank and humourous about the discovery of his own limits, and keep us entertained the entire time with each day's adventures.

One section that had me laughing out loud was the summit ascent on the mountain in the first part of the book - where he suddenly felt much better after a couple of days struggling - so marched straight past the leading climbers and bellowed "HAS ANYBODY SEEN MY HORSE!?"

It goes without saying that you don't have to be a fan of Brian to read the book. It's a great read. I would recommend it to anybody.

Two years ago (as it turns out, a mere two weeks after Mr Blessed), I travelled to Venezuela and with my expedition party ascended Mt Roraima. The portrayal of the trek conjurs up imagery both exciting and fascinating, as well as bringing back memories long forgotten. The trek to the Angel Falls and the time spent in Canaima, deep in the Venezuelan rainforest is another section I am familiar with, and, again, one of the most beautiful places I have ever visited is brought alive for the reader through Brian Blessed. I congratulate him on achieving his lifelong dream of visiting Roraima - "The Lost World" - and recommend this book to anyone who has unfulfilled dreams of visiting magical and mysterious places.
