Product Description

The Drenai fortress of Dros Delnoch has fallen and blood hungry Nadir hordes sweep across the land, bringing desolation and despair. But, with the Nadir triumphant, slavers seize a young girl in the tiny realm of Gothir and a peasant boy stes off on a quest that will shake the world. To rescue her, Kiall must cross the savage steppes and journey through the Halls of Hell, facing ferocious beasts, deadly warriors and demons of the dark. But the boy is not alone. With him are the legendary heroes of Bel-Azar: Chareos the Blademaster, Beltzer the Axeman and the bowmen Finn and Maggrig. And one among them hides a secret that could free the world of Nadir domination. For he is the Nadir Bane, the hope of the Drennai. He is the Earl of Bronze.

Ever since reading David Gemmell's 'Troy' series of books I have been hooked on Gemmell as an author. I have since begun to read all of his books and the Drenai books are simply wonderful reads.

I was originally unsure about whether to read the Drenai books as I've never been a huge fan of heroic fantasy - however given just how much I enjoyed the Troy books and the wonderful writing style of David Genmmell I decided to try them. I am so pleased that I did and I have now read nearly all of Gemmell's books and urge anyone considering the books to do it, you will not be disappointed.

All of the books are great and can be read as stand alone books or in order. The characters are wonderfully bought to life, there's love, romance, humour, twists & turns, betrayal, revenge, heroes, villains, sorcery, savagery, battles, noble deeds and you will simply fall into the world the Gemmell creates for you. These books deserve to be read and its a an absolute tragedy that Gemmell is no longer with us.

Depth of Character 2 Oct 2006
Format:Paperback
I thought this boo kwas fantastic. I've read a fari bit of heroic fantasy and, in all those books, the heroes are shining men with no faults. Just as the fables tell. But QFLH shows the truth.

The story revolves aroudn heroes of a lost battle - stories of whom describe them as brave, valiant heroes - yet nothing could be further than the truth. One is fat and ugly and smells - one is a coward and was only present at the battle because he ran from somewhere else. This book scrapes away the romantic veneer that campfire songs give to heroes and portrays them as they could be: real people with real faults. The characters in this book are superb.

As is the story. As with all of Gemmell's books, this grips from the first few pages, right through to the end. It's a great book and my favourite Gemmell book so far.

Great tale 25 April 2012

The tale is excellent with good pace and sound wisdom and a mixture of flaws in the main characters. The story develops well and keeps the reader on the edge of the seat. I found this a really good novel for escape and enjoyment. A slight comment in the ending was that it finished too quickly. Very happy to recommend.
