More About the Author

Alanna Knight MBE was born on Tyneside of Scots-Irish parentage. Her first award-winning novel 'Legend of the Loch' was published in 1969 and she has now written more than sixty novels (including sixteen in the acclaimed Inspector Faro series and seven featuring his daughter Rose McQuinn). In an impressive writing career spanning over forty years she began with historical novels and in 1988 launched into historical crime with Inspector Faro and his daughter Rose. All are available as e-books.

She also wrote a series of books about Tam Eildor, a time-travelling detective, and Alanna is a life-long fan and an authority on Robert Louis Stevenson. In 'A Violent Passion' she writes about his marriage to Fanny Osbourne. This is also available in e-books.

Alanna lives in Edinburgh, beneath Arthur's Seat, in the dramatic surroundings of Scottish history. A founding member and Honorary President of the Scottish Association of Writers and the Edinburgh Writers' Club and member of Crime writers' Association, she enjoys researching her books, loves travelling, walking, painting and talking to readers in libraries.

In 2014 she was awarded an MBE for services to literature.

Her books, also in large print and audio rate, are amongst the most borrowed.

Praise from Ian Rankin:' Alanna Knight could hardly be better with a crime novelist's insight into motive and aftermath.'

Rose McQuinn has been living in Solomon's Tower since her return to Edinburgh four yeas ago. Since that day she has earned her living as a Lady Investigator, Discretion Guaranteed. Now on this Autumn day in 1899 whilst walking on a hill with her dog, the mythical Thane, Rose is led, by a small white, highland terrier to a lady who has twisted her ankle out walking. The lady is the rich and beautiful Elma Miles Rice, and the two strike up an unexpected friendship, more enthusiastic however on Mrs Rice's side than Rose's.

At this time the circus has come to Edinburgh, and the tragic deaths by hanging of two young unmarried girls is being investigated. An attack on the husband of her new friend Mrs Rice brings Rose into the investigation. Attending the circus with Mrs Rice, Rose is shocked to see a familiar face - but this is not the only shock in store for Rose, or for the reader as this tale unfolds.

An exciting entry in this series, which moves the story forward at a pace.

Took this book on holiday with me and actually read it all in about 4/5 days. I couldn't put it down! The book keeps you guessing about who the killer is and there are some interesting twists throughout. All in all I really enjoyed this book and I would recommend it to a friend. I bought a second hand copy of this book as it was much cheaper than buying the new copy but the book was in great condition.

I have long been a fan of Alanna Knight's Inspector Faro, less so of Rose McQuinn though I read them. This is the best Rose McQuinn by far, a bit on the sad side but a good story. Recommended.

Well written historical novel based in Edinburgh, Scotland. Strong female lead character trying to break the female barriers of investigation and even "bike-riding." Love the addition of the Wolfhound as her loyal partner.

Anything Charles Todd writes is an excellent read for me. I always watch for his next book in the series.
