More About the Author

I am a confirmed history addict born a mere 35 years after the Battle of the Somme and 11 after the Battle of Britain. I grew up in Scotland but now live on Canada's west coast where I have written over 30 books (novels and non-fiction) for kids teens and adults. All my books are historically-based and extensively researched (even the fiction). Some of the subjects that have captured my attention are: Arctic Exploration (North with Franklin: The Lost Journals of James Fitzjames); First World War (And in the Morning); Spanish Civil War (Lost In Spain); Romans (Germania); Indian Mutiny (Where Soldiers Lie); Wild West (Written in Blood); and Second World War (Flames of the Tiger and Four Steps to Death). Many of my titles are available as eBooks as well as in traditional formats. There is more about me and my books on my website, http://johnwilsonauthor.com and news on my blog, http://johnwilson-author.blogspot.com. Follow me on Twitter at TeenReadings.

HASH(0x8ec95eb8) out of 5 stars I Just Want to Keep Reading 2 Aug. 2013

This series originated as a serial and is available in multiple formats. It can be purchased in three volumes (the way I'm reading it), in a single volume, or as individual installments of the serial. While I liked the second volume slightly less than the first, it is still one of my favorite recent reads. Unlike the first volume, which moves back and forth among characters, this one covers three central characters and tells their stories one at a time, which really lets a reader settle in and see the world from that character's point of view.

This volume is a bit more action-driven than the first, but still contains the ethical wrestling that makes it compelling. The problems in the time of the anti-Cathar crusade were every bit as complex as the big problems we face now. I appreciate the way the author highlights the difficulty of determining the right course of action and the risk of being misled by narrow personal assumptions.
