Product Description

Review

"This work is a wonderfully readable anthology of recent research in the relatively new field of queer linguistics....an excellent survey...a good introduction to the field for graduate students and professional anthropologists and linguists."--Anthropological Linguistics
"Breaks new ground....Recommended for academic collections and large comprehensive gay and lesbian public library collections."--Library Journal
"The editors are to be thanked for having assembled such a rich feast."--The Women's Review of Books

Product Description

Queerly Phrased is a groundbreaking collection of previously unpublished essays that examine the relationship between language and the construction of gender and sexuality. Bridging the gap between sociolinguistics and gay studies, the contributors draw on traditional models of language anaylsis of well as recent developments in gender theory to show how language plays a crucial role in the creation of culture and its representation.

Lavender linguistics at its finest. 28 Oct 2000
By Kurtis - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
I bought this book on a whim, and have found it compelling reading ever since. It contains excellently written essays which very thoroughly explore their immediate subject. As a book on linguistics, however, be prepared for occasionally arcane essays like "The Colour of His Eyes: Polari and the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence". If you are interested in language issues and would like to broaden your world-view, I can't recommend this book enough.

My favourite line, from the essay on Gay Man's English: "Honey, what you see is what you get!" Fortunately, with this book, you get more than what you see.
