A beautiful film based on a novel by Korda, we follow the troubled life of a young girl brought up in Culcutta and her rise to stardom... The first portion of the movie filmed in India is much more interesting than the later years...
The movie was actually shown as a mini series in the late 80's. Superb acting make this a great (TV) film.

I was glued to this film from the very beginning. It is very long because originally shown as a TV series I discovered later. None of it drags. The acting is superb and it based on the life of a very famous film star. Her own story is far more engaging than any film she was ever in. Merle Oberon.

The film is about Queenie, an Anglo Indian woman who eventually did good and made something of her life in her chosen profession of becoming an actress, however in contrast, others after watching the movie might feel it is simply a scene for a silhouette of the American dream, melodramatic and nice.

Personally I was disappointed with the lack of explaination/space given to David (Kirk Doulgas) Konig's death and the manner it was portrayed and was delt with in the film.
The final scenes of the movie shows Queenie attending the opening ceremonies where she gets the courage to announces her mother's birthright to be "Indian" and talks about her husband (Konig in the film) in the past tense, as do others when referring to him by name.
I did think to myself as the film came to an end that the old fox must have died, especially when Queenie walks into the arms of her former lover, the photographer and then proceeds to passionately embrace and kiss him as her husband (Konig) had passed away before the premiere. (at least in real life).

The film is engrosing and in typical Hollywood style very entertaining. Remember that when you cross reference the main female character to the real life Hollywood legend Merle Oberon (upon which this film is based). Be also prepared that the film is also based on the novel by Michael Korda and as Hollywood goes, they do have a habit of not sticking to the complete storyline in books as written by the author.

On the whole a very interesting film.
