Review

A well-researched, highly readable account. . . . The book is delightful and will be of value and interest to both the student of military history and of the Victorian Empire. --This text refers to an alternate Paperback edition.

Product Description

This is the story of what Rudyard Kipling called the savage wars of peace . Throughout Queen Victoria s long reign there was not a single year in which, somewhere in the world, British soldiers were not fighting for her and her Empire. It tells the fascinating story of the little known and extraordinary small wars, and of the men who fought them. These wars were the price on Empire, of world leadership and of national pride, and it was usually paid without qualms or regret; continuous warfare became an accepted way of life in the Victorian era, and in the process, the British Empire quadrupled in size. But, engrossing as these small wars are and they bristle with bizarre, tragic and humorous incident it is the officers and men who fought them that dominate the book. With their courage, foolhardiness and eccentricities, they are an unforgettable lot.

I can't recommend this book enough. Well written, full of action and informative without being judgemental. Really brings to life a controversial but fascinating period of Britain's history. Particularly good on the Indian Mutiny and North West Frontier. Buy it!

When I first began reading this book, I was disappointed, thinking that it was little more that an account of the various military campaigns undertaken during the reign of Queen Victoria, with no attempt to connect these wars with events within Britain itself.

However, very shortly indeed, I realized that this book was nothing short of a tour de force! The author uses wit and a thorough understanding of his subject to draw the reader in, both informing and entertaining!

A lovely read 19 Dec 2003
Format:Paperback
Very enjoyable.

Everything was relevant and interesting.

I especially like the authors way of approaching the subject and shall read more of his books.

I feel as though my understanding of the Victorian era has also been much enhanced as a side effect of this enjoyable read.
