Book Description

29 Jan 2004 1403932972 978-1403932976
In 1837, an eighteen-year-old girl who liked going to see plays became Queen of England. For all her regal bearing, Victoria had common - even lowbrow - tastes. As an exuberant teenager she was thrilled by the lion tamer Isaac Van Amburgh; as a young mother she invited Tom Thumb to Buckingham Palace; as an elderly widow she was charmed by 'Buffalo' Bill Cody. At her command, courtiers and members of the Royal family appeared (often unwillingly) in private theatricals and tableaux vivants. She wrote in her diaries about famous actors and actresses, drew sketches of favourite productions, and followed backstage gossip by reading the Theatrical Journal.
But behind the pleasure there was a purpose. How did Victoria exploit the theatre to enhance her public image? How did the theatre use royal patronage to prove its moral fitness? Queen Victoria and the Theatre of her Age seeks out answers as it tells the story of the most enduring alliance in British history between the stage and the throne. Lively, accessible - and intensively researched - this book will appeal to anyone interested in monarchy's place in popular culture.

'...amiable study of Queen Victoria's theatre-going.' - John Bowen, Times Literary Supplement

'Queen Victoria and the Theatre of Her Age is a little gem of beautifully researched detail, full of quotations from original sources; the surprising, the thought provoking, the amusing and the bizarre'. - Charlotte Zeepvat, Royalty Digest

'As with Schoch's previous excavations of Victorian theatricality, this is a very enjoyable, red-plush study.' - Plays International
