Maggie Bell's 1974 solo debut really blows the lid on so-called soul music. An interpreter of any kind of song you please, she displays genuine soul in everything she does here. Of course, it isn't soul as we tend to think of it. It's usually blues, as on "Souvenirs", an infectiously latinised blues on J.J. Cale's "After Midnight", funky rock on "Cado Queen", big band blues on the title track, catchy rock on "Oh My My", and oh, why don't you find out for yourself?
Not only has she got a great voice, she uses it so much more effectively than most singers. Sure, she can bend a note any way she wants, but she doesn't do it for the sake of it, recognising that sometimes singing it straight is the right way. Nor does she simply turn up the volume. Her bluesy, pain-inflected timbre often gives way to sweet and tender or pure joy. It helps when you've got a band that can cut it like this one too.
The bonuses are live tracks which don't quite fit in. "Penicillin Blues" is largely a showcase for solo guitar, while "Wishing Well" sounds as if it was recorded in a bucket. No matter, this album is class.

Someone gave me a taped copy of this album many years ago.It got played so much it was beginning to show signs of wear and I eventually lost it during a house move.Now I have the CD it is great to be able to listen again to one of the most distinctive female vocalists of her era.The title track,Queen of the Night, is to me worth the price of the CD alone and the rest aint to shabby either.

This album has been a constant companion since it's first release as a vynil L.P. and is quite simply the best rock - blues recording I have ever heard. Maggie's singing is faultless and the backing band superb. I will never tire of it.
