Book Description

11 May 2013
From the mind of USA TODAY Bestselling author Kate Danley comes a dark romantic fairytale. When Faunus, the god of daydreams, breaks the heart of Queen Mab, the queen of dreams, revenge can be the only answer. Using the most powerful families in Verona, they wage their war against one another, and place their final bets upon the heads of two youths, one named Romeo and the other named Juliet. But when Queen Mab falls in love with a gentleman named Mercutio, everything changes and she will do anything, even if it means destroying the world, to save him. Will it be enough to stop the tragedy? Or only spur it forward to its terrible end? Weaving Shakespeare's original text into a new fantasy about the redemptive power of love, fans of The Woodcutter will delight in this period retelling by award-winning author Kate Danley. Experience the romance and passion of Romeo & Juliet from a different point of view - through the eyes of the bringer of dreams... Queen Mab.

5.0 out of 5 stars Lovely twist on a timeless tale 1 Oct 2013
Format:Kindle Edition
Firstly, I received an ARC copy of this book in return for an honest review.

It's been longer than I care to remember since I read Romeo and Juliet - but this book reminded me what a beautiful, forlorn tale it is.

It's a beautifully written twist on Romeo and Juliet, showing the celestial meddling on the background from Queen Mab, Faunus and Juno which led them inexorably to their doom.

I felt like I knew the characters better for reading this book, and although it is never going to replace the original (and nor was it intended to!) it is an excellent book to read in companionship with the play.

Read it - you'll fall in love all over again with this classic story and it's characters.

5.0 out of 5 stars you don't have to be a Shakespeare fan to enjoy it 15 Oct 2013
By Mia - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Kindle Edition
I have to admit, I like Shakespeare but I just *like* him. I have never read his works outside of school and I don't go to the Bard's plays. However, being a fan of Danley's previous books I decided to give this one a try as well and I am so glad that I did! While the prose is a bit more elegant and in line with the FEEL of Shakespeare's work, it doesn't try to replicate it -- to me this is a big plus. It's entirely readable - and enjoyable! - for someone who prefers just simpler writing styles. SO! If you saw "Shakespeare" or "Romeo and Juliet" and were scared, FEAR NOT! :)

The story itself is lovely. This book is a beautifully crafted story, inspired by the Queen Mab soliloquy in Romeo & Juliet. Queen Mab is the bringer of dreams and watches over the fair city of Verona every evening. A contest with Faunus, the bringer of daydreams, engages Queen Mab into a fight over the citizens of Verona and the houses of Capulet and Montague, which brings the reader into the familiar world we know from Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet. Full of beautiful imagery and extremely creative insight, we get to see what happens before the fateful meeting of R&J and how these "star crossed lovers" were overseen by two demi-gods who guided their eventual outcome over the course of hundreds of years.

If you liked Danley's "The Woodcutter" then you will love Queen Mab. It is full of the same unique interpretations of existing lore and extremely well-written that even I as a non-fan of Shakespeare went off to buy Romeo & Juliet immediately afterward, just to continue the tone set by this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Enchanting 25 Sep 2013

What a splendid story of love both gained and lost, and of friendship shattered then regained. "Queen Mab" offers a whole new look to Romeo and Juliet's love story, bringing a new appreciation to the classic story. Queen Mab and her heart of ice drew me in and kept me entangled rooting for true love, and oh! How I despised the awful Faunus and his trickery! I really love new takes on old stories and this one did not let me down.. Well played, Kate Danley, we'll played..

5.0 out of 5 stars Queen Mab 1 Oct 2013
By K.Dunst - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Kindle Edition
I must admit, I liked this story much better than Shakespeare's version. Although I loved the depth of emotion in the original play, the ending was never satisfactory. I am glad that the story has been modified, turning the tragedy to joy instead. I am also glad that dear Mercutio was given a happy ending, of sorts. I never liked his untimely end.

Queen Mab is definitely a character. Turned bitter by Faunus when he betrays her and breaks her heart, she turns her wrath on him and his favored Montagues. She uses the friendship of House Capulet and turns him against Montague. Faunus and Mab use the Montagues and Capulets in their personal war like pieces in a chessboard. It isn't until a hundred years pass that they raise the stakes and things draw to an end. It is a terrible thing to see young lovers caught between the games of the demigods.

I would recommend this book to others, and I have enjoyed reading many of Kate Danley's other works.

3.0 out of 5 stars Interesting back story to Romeo and Juliet 12 Jan 2014
By j. frzz - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
If you've read "Romeo and Juliet"....this book, Queen Mab, makes a
compelling read into the mythology that might have influenced Shakespeare.
People of his time were much more familiar with the myths of old than we are
today. The speech....short as it was, by Romeos friend, which mentioned
Queen Mab, was as beautiful as it was mysterious. So why was Queen Mab
mentioned at all? This book by Danley answers this question and then some.
I gave it a three star rating because I felt, at times, that not enough information
about the myth and how it all worked, was given. This led to some confusion
at times. Also...at the end of the story...having already reached a climax and a
suitable ending.....more paragraphs were given to wrap up what didn't need any more.
to be said. All in all though...an interesting read for anyone who is interested in delving
into ancient myths and a more complete understanding of what may have influenced
people of that era.

It has been a long time since I've read a book straight through in one day but, I could not put this one down! The writing was beautiful and the blending of the two styles was very well done.
