Beyond controversial, 5 Feb 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Queen and Freddie Mercury 'Innuendoes' (Paperback)
Innuendoes is unlike any other book I have ever read. Its content cannot be easily, or well, summarised. Were I to proffer an outline, people would possibly feel moved to dismiss it but if they read the book they might feel differently. On one level the Innuendoes is a biography of Freddie Mercury and is a far more compassionate, complex and thoughtful depiction of the singer than one usually finds. The book also has mystical dimensions; considers moral/ethical matters; and relates a moving and thought provoking autobiography. The book has no ultimate conclusion so it isn't really something with which you can agree or disagree, nonetheless I'm sure that it will prove to be highly controversial. Many people from many different fields of interest might well find something in it beyond controversy.

Pushing away what one seeks, 12 Feb 2011
This review is from: Queen and Freddie Mercury 'Innuendoes' (Paperback)
I was the official artist for this book.
In my opinion, the book is a pioneering work, dealing with fields that at the time were not widely discussed, but have since become more and more part of everyday life as awareness changed over the years. What used to be dismissed as fantasy has since slowly coalesced into reality for many who have taken the very brave step to "come out" with their spirituality (thus also making it "safe" for more people to come out). Likewise, many changes to our world as a whole have somewhat fallen into place.
Unfortunately, the very interesting ideas are not supported by a careful or well-crafted treatment, and this leaves the negative impression that the writer really hates her own art, and wishes for its expulsion from her "system". Following this is also a much too desperate attempt to "make something good" out of the subjects discussed and "help others", blinded to the fact that shedding light on intrinsic value is already greater than good, and should not really be abstracted into transferrable attributes (i.e. "used" for something else, distilling a message while ignoring its primary reality). In this way, the book in itself fails to elevate perception to the level it is intrinsically designed to do (primarily that of its writer), and thus ultimately pushes away the very thing sought after when writing it. Which is ironic, considering said changes to our world - that this book is (among many other values), an accusation of the failure to recognize the truth - the real existence of the Other.
