Product Description

CD Description

RE-PRESSING OF THIS LONG TERM OUT OF STOCK ITEM. Yma Sumac was a phenomenon in the music world during the early 1950s. With an amazing vocal range of four octaves, this attractive, mysterious woman with a voluptuous figure catapulted onto the American music scene with a 10" album "Voice Of Xtabay" that topped the US charts in 1950. Everything surrounding Yma Sumac had an air of mystery about it, she was said to have been born in a tiny village in the Peruvian high Andes and was a descendant of the Inca Kings and her exotic repertoire was said to be based on Inca legends. This is a great way to discover Yma's unusual vocal ability. Tracks: Xtabay / Wayra / Negrito Filomino / Mamalla! / Panarima / Ataypura! / Wimoweh / No Es Vida / Ccori Canastitay / Lullia Mak 'Ta / Kuyaway / Karibe Taki / Kon Tiki / Najala's Lament / Birds / Bo Mambo / Taki Rari / Goomba Boomba / Malambo No. 1 / Indian Carnival / Cha Cha Gitano / Jungla.

The best so far! 6 April 2005
By A Customer
Format:Audio CD
I am not sure how this collection can ever be topped, as it has a startling 54 tracks! It starts with extrememly rare early stuff not released outside of South America, from 1943. It is fascinating to hear, as the tracks play chronologically, how Yma Sumac progressed. The music became more lush and her voice stronger. There are even tracks from a rare stage show she was in, called "Flahooley". This TWO CD SET, takes the very best from ALL Sumac albums, and sends the listner through a variety of emotions and scenarios. Every magical note possible from the Sumacian throat is present in this collection! Sumac and her manager were in full cooperation with the is CD and her new site www.yma-sumac.com, is mentioned in the liner notes.

The Best Collection to Date! 11 Dec 2005
By Damon Devine - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD
This CD is the most complete collection to date, for it includes the best tracks from ALL Yma Sumac albums, INCLUDING her terribly rare pre- America album, recorded in Argentina in 1943. It is fascinating to hear her vocal improvements as she grew into a mature woman. In the liner notes are rare photos (only ever seen on her official site, www.yma-sumac.com (don't forget the hyphen!). This is a TWO CD set, with beautifully remastered sound. For the die-hard fans, this is a must. For the new fans, this is a glorious and thorough introduction into the magical world of Yma Sumac.

Worth it just for the 1940s tracks 29 May 2009
By Mudiwa - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD|Amazon Verified Purchase
I have CDs of all the music on this compilation, except for the 1940s tracks. If you are considering this to sample Yma Sumac, it is a fine choice. If you are a collector, or fan, the old tracks make this worth while.

Yma Sumac has to be heard to be believed.

Phenomenal Double CD 23 Nov 2008
By wrbtu - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD
I purchased this CD just a couple of weeks before Yma Sumac's passing (on November 1 2008). There are 54 songs here, several of which I did not have (recorded in Argentina in 1943). Even with the primitive recording techniques of that time, Ms. Sumac's magnificent voice can be heard in it's formative (but still formidable) stage. Included here are her three songs from the very rare Broadway musical, "Flahooley," which she appeared in. The liner notes are excellent, & there's an early B&W photo of her that's fascinating. For those of you who have all her LPs & previous CDs, this set is a must-have, just for the 1943 recordings alone. For those of you who haven't heard Ms. Sumac's singing, be warned that she is an experience like none you have ever heard before.
